Met up with fishing buddy Ray (aka crabkracker) for some kelp stringer follies.
Conditions were windy to start, but it laid down pretty nicely as the morning progressed. Water was a chilly 55-56 degrees, but the fish still wanted to play.
Target species was sheephead. Ended up landing 7. Two were legal with another one clooooooose, but no cigar. Ray ended up scoring a sweet 18+ inch grunt on the dead stick bait. Started with a subtle tap and then a drag burning run into the kelp stringers. Nice work getting him out.
I ended the day with blue perch, blacksmith perch, opal eye, sculpin, sheephead, calicos, a couple of beautiful garibaldi, kelpfish and 2 different species of wrasse.
Excellent work out to start burning off the Holiday grazing blues. Thanks Ray for the invite.
Here's a few pics:
Garibaldi #1
Garbaldi #2.
Cute little plaid bass. They were on the chew but none were bigger than 10-11 inches.
First sheephead. One of 7 caught.
The teeth on these critters always crack me up. Reminds me of the old Jerry Lewis film "the Nutty Professor".
Sculpin in "en guard" mode.
The stare down.
Old "blue eyes". aka Opaleye
Halfmoon perch doing his best opaleye impersonation. I think he needs some colored contact lens to complete the disguise.
Kelp fish doing his best to look like the stringers.
With the end of the season coming up, me thinks a hooping outting is in order...and soon!
We'll see what the weekend has in store for me. Stay tuned.
