Kind of.
We were visiting relatives in Mission Viejo and La Mesa, so it made sense to stop in La Jolla to do some fishing before the storm. January 2nd was a beautiful day on the water. There was absolutely no wind or waves all morning, which made it easy to sleep in.
As we were pedalling out of the Marine Reserve (hopefully not to be expanded this year), we crossed paths with Danimal, who was done for the day. We chatted for a bit and learned about the latest spot and depth for yellows, thanks Dan. We made our way there and were accompanied be several other yakkers, and yes, the quote du jour was, "you should've been here yesterday." It seems like I hear that a lot! I metered quite a few bait swarms with larger fish hanging above them. We tried and tried, but had no takers on the irons. Other guys were using live or both, with no luck. One guy hooked into a large shark that broke off. Some were getting rockfish, but I didn't see the point...you're just killing them by bringing them up. Unless they're sculpin, which I THINK are OK to keep now.
Anyhow, we got bored and decided to putt around the caves for a while. There were plenty of garibaldi around, but we didn't catch any since I believe the limit is one per person, and we need at least 5.

No DFG agents ambushed us on paddle boards or popped up from trash bins, so I kinda felt like my license was wasted that day. Oh well, there will be more opportunities this year.
A couple of pics:
I've never seen LJ so tranquil:
The caves are intriguing and I recommend getting up close and personal on a kayak:
I'll bet these homeowners wish they had my view. I know I was wishing I had theirs.
