Supergun Mothership 1/13/08
Good weather was all we needed to motivate us to load up and head out.Capt Ron, myself,The Dan H. and Mark P. left Channel Islands at 7:00pm Sat and made our way to the west end of Cruz. Mirage outfitted with her new lights was on the hook, with a couple other boats. Squid in the area, just not floating. It was a tough snag ,but we managed about 20 pcs with our Candy Catchers, before we went around the corner to drop the hook and get a few hours rest. Grey light was a steady pick on macs on the Candy Bomber 3 oz. We even snagged a few more squirts here too. Once we filled up on hoop bait, we split for Gull. Just east of the reserve, we launched our yaks, me on my Prowler Trident with my new Humminbird 595c, oh how sweet it is! Mark Pierpont was on his Wilderness Systems kayak. We headed to the kelp, armed with live squid, macs, and the usual assortment of plastics and other goodies. First area started of good with Pierpont nailing a nice Sheepshead, boga gave it a little over 4 lbs, and back in the water. No calicos or anything else on the deeper edges and holes. We moved in and found the Calicos right on the boiler rocks. Strips of squid on a light wire hook, light line and a 1/2 oz sliding sinker was all you needed. We pulled on a few each, Pierponts big one pushed 4 lbs, good bronze checkerboard! Bird piles 1/4 mile off our location, lured Mark out to check on them, I stayed put along the inside and worked east. He called back that it was tons of mammals working a huge school of anchovies. At one point he had the bait looking for shelter under his kayak with all the bird and mammal action inches away. Conditions were epic, short sleaves, just the bite was like it was January, go figure! We are in the process of getting the Supergun ready for 4-5 pack charters with kayaks or 6 packs without yaks. More trips to work out the kinks will be in order as the weather windows allow. Good to be back on the water! TL Rhino
