Fished the same area as last week. Decided on a surf launch from the beach.
8am and the tide was down, lauchning over the rocks was
sketchy at best. I launched first to show Alex how it's done.
He was chomping at the bit and in a rush to get out.
I told him to take his time but he just went for it. I could see him
running back to beach to collect his kayak after he dumped it.
Got himself a crunchy reel out of the deal.
Fish were biting from 8:30 to 10:00 then things shut down.
The kelp was LOADED with fin bait. All sizes of bait everywhere.
Senorita's, smelt, anchovy, and sardine, everywhere.
Water was clear 10vis, hard to get bit with that much bait in the water. The calico's were
exploding on bait all morning long. I tossed a spinnerbait right on top of one boil and pulled out a nice fattie.
Caught my first WSB in a long time, short. I saw a nice legal WSB floating in the kelp but spooked it
when I plunked my bait in the water, it only dropped from about 6in up but that was enough.
NOTE TO SELF: Put lure in water THEN hit freespool.
Bite picked up again around 12. Just after noon I had one monster hookup on the outside
edge of the kelp with the same fishtrap that hooked the short WSB. Thought I was snagged at first.
Made a pull and it pulled back so I pulled a little harder and the sleigh ride began.
I got right over it and was hoping to catch a glimpse, made one hard pull straight up
and the fish finally realized it was hooked and took off, almost spooled me
but broke off near the end. The rod was bouncing with some massive tail beats.
My guess was big black.
Short clip of me getting spooled.
Off the water by 1ish. Surf was up a bit, but we both landed fine
