The red tide made the water look pretty grim today. We couldn't even see our bait when it was in 4" of water. It was a little clearer out at the breakwater, but no fish registered on the sonar. I don't know if it's the fact that I mounted my sensor inside of the kayak hull, or if it's the red tide, but I haven't been able to sense fish in the water the past few times I've been out. Anyhow, this 2-footer hit me by surprise. I was chatting with my son when all of a sudden, WHAM! This fish hit hard and gave my drag a run for it's money. After a few times of up to the surface and back down to the bottom, my son netted it. This partially makes up for the larger flattie I lost at Ventura a couple of weeks ago. That one snapped the line right at the hook as I tried to land him myself. I didn't have my net man with me that day.
Here's my net man with the catch:
I saw some guys on the break water catch a cabbie on the ocean side. Another kayaker told me he got a sandbass on the South end of the breakwater. That was about it. I saw no one working the beach behind the rudder room, nor the rocks along the street.
