Let me know guys when you're going out again. I need to try a surf launch and get it out of the way. Besides I'd like to watch someone with a little experience do it before I try it. Where in the valley area is a good place to go for yak accessories (leashes, etc?) I definately need to have everything strapped down tight when I try this.

SteveO,

I'll post the next time I do a surf launch.

Launching is the easier part: you are facing the waves and your power stroke direction is in your favor. Landing is a be-ach: you have to look behind you to watch the waves while trying to paddle forward. You may even have to paddle backward to stay perpendicular to them. When the wave lifts the rear of the boat-LEANBACKto keep your center of gravity low. The idea is to get some speed up and follow a wave in. If the wave turns you parallel, it's all over. Single yaks handle quickly and are much easier to land. Imagine trying to get 2 people in a 15' tandem to do the above in unison-almost impossible.

Also, watch the sets. Large sets of waves come in everyseveral minutes with lulls in between. At Surfrider, you can look left to see the sets at the point. If the surfers are on the faces of waves, you know those wave will reach the beach at the pier in about 30 seconds. Just gotta be patient and wait. My 2 cents.

So where's a good fishing spot that isn't a surf launch? I'dlike to try that as well just to get the feel of being on the ocean in a yak and fishing from it.

Just shore launch SteveO......... leave the pole in the car, practice a
few launch/landings, and you will be ready to go. The worst that can
happen is you will get a little wet.

Steve- If you're from the valley, the closest place to launch from a dock would be Channel Islands Harbor or Ventura Marina toward the North. Toward the South, I think it would be Marina Del Ray. I wish there were more.

Dan- Yeah, I'd say you did a pretty good job just being able to launch without dumping it. Takes a while to build up the nerve just to get in the surf. Expect to have some wet landings in the future. Like Kent said, it takes practice.
