GBers in LJ 6/27

Met up with SteveO and Thresher on the beach nice and early. MJ phoned, reporting some car trouble in OC and wasn't going to make it...

Had to Gerry rig a hatch for Frank using a plastic bag and good old duct tape (as it was in MJ's car).....We launched through the surf and made our way to the pier for unlimited greenies with spanish mixed in.....things were looking up!

Alas, a bit of north wind and serious drop in water temp (71 last week, and down to 61 today) were not looking too promising. We trolled our baits all around the right spots for nada.....

On our way back from WAY out, I sent one bait to the bottom and kept one high.....Got a nice pickup that had my clicker singing that sweet song. Gave it an 8 count and put it in gear....rod halfway loaded up and <THUNK>....bait came up crushed and eyes buggin.....my guess is a homeguard yellow with commitment issues.

Further along, I do a bait check to make sure all is well, and my bottom bait was again hit....this time punctured and raked! Didn't even know it happened.....doh.

At around 8, the wind died and it glassed up nicely. Frank and I were chatting and drifting bait when out of nowhere, a wild wind kicked up at about 15-17MPH with mixed hot and cold gusts. Then lightning over the hills and booming thunder. Then buckets of rain for about 10 minutes....needless to say, with whitecaps and rain and electricity in the air, the entire bakers dozen of butt boaters got outta there!!!

NEXT TIME!!!!

Sorry I couldnt make it!!
Frank, PM me your mailing address and I'll UPS the hatch out manana free of charge.
Looks like my 40 mpg beast of a Honda was a bit too beat from a fireworks run to Nevada last week(engine got hot scooting up the grade on the 14) but didnt act up since.
Going 80mph on the 5 I hit some CalTrans roadwork which knocked the lanes down to 1 and the speed way down...car didnt like that and quickly overheated...then pop! Luckily I limped into Anaheim...where "we" know the area somewhat. Limped around to some gas staions in search of some radiator sealant. Finally found some at a Chevron station...tried that to no avail...then made a call to Dan to let him know I was out of commision.
Wife came down to shuttle me around as I didnt want to leave the car with yak and gear inside. Needless to say she was "really happy."
Tossed the yak and rods in the Tahoe then off to wait for an Autozone to open for a quick swap on the radiator. Luckily the Zone had my radiator in stock for $103 with lifetime warantee. Took all of 20 minutes to swap it out(gotta love Honda's only one bolt to remove)....culprit for the original meltdown was a pinhole leak in the radiator cap.
And for the story in pics....since I enjoy pics as much as everyone else.
You can see that the top of the radiator literally blew off and steam cleaned the center of the radiator.

Well, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Thanks for the report anyway. Sorry about the car troubles, MJ. Been there, done that!

Bummer on the car....But look on the bright side, at least the report wasn't

"The most epic YT and WSB in La Jolla History"

That would've been insult to injury.

Wild weather indeeed. I was a bit worried when I heard the thunder and had dark clouds directly overhead. Graphite rods + lightenting = fried fisherman.
Dan, thanks for the guided tour down there. I'll definatley be up for it again.
MJ no worries about the hatch. i'm sure I'll be in your area of the woods soon enough.

Well I can say I've had better days. Started off the day with nada sleep, didn't feel well when I we got to the beach, and then needed help from Danimal (thanks Dan) getting out through the surf. It's a whole different ballgame doing it in the dark by the way. We paddled our way to Scripps pier for some bait and I'm feeling like crap the whole way. We got bait and headed out (loooong way out). Half way there and chum city. After puking my guts out and being super weak, I soon realized this wasn't going to be a good day. Threw some iron for a little while and headed in. Dry landing thankfully. I'll definately do this again just under much different circumstances. That sucks MJ about the car but we'll hit up LJ another time.

From all my intel gathering...the best time to hit LJ is at first word of a hot bite..or consistant fish reports..no planning...just get up and go. For all of us non locals....and some locals for that matter LJ can be hit and miss.
I will get my revenge on LJ...oh....yes I will!
