Big Sur 7-2-06

I've been so busy traveling for work that I haven't been out on the kayak in a long time. Although, I have been on a canoe back in Minnesota a few times. Anyway, I did manage to get away with the wife up to Big Sur for the weekend. There was a fairly large swell and alot of wind all weekend. We were planning on launching Saturday morning, but couldn't find anywhere around Big Sur where I could convince my wife to launch. Ended up driving down to San Simeon for an easy launch in the bay by the pier. We paddled out around the corner into 4 foot swells with 15+ mph winds. Neither of us were enjoying it too much, and I was drifting so fast it made fishing almost impossible. We ended up heading back into the bay where we just poked around in the kelp and along the shoreline.

Launched solo out of Mill Creek at 7:30 Sunday morning. Paddled out to the kelp and caught all the 1-3 lb Blue Bass I wanted. Left them bitting in search of a ling. Hooked two nice sized fish, but both of them broke me off on the rocks. Wind and swell both seemed to pick up a bit and I landed by 9:30. Made it both in and out dry with some lucky timing, barely made it over a very large breaking wave on the way out and just missed getting picked up by a wave about to break on the way in. Catching the fish was the easy part.

Anyone know where I can find a Thresher off my kayak? I'm in need of an adrenaline rush. Carpenteria Reef? Outside Ventura Harbor? Malibu?

My guess would be Malibu but I haven't heard any confirmed reports just yet.

Yep, it seems to always be windy up there in San Simeon. No fun to fish in the wind. Thanks for the report, and welcome to Get Bent.

The T's are out and about up and down the coast from LA to Carp Reef. A few taken from the surf in LA, 3 confirmed catches locally Sunday and one up at Carp Reef on father's day.
My gear is loaded and I'm ready to go!

Creekster-
Yup, I'm Dustin from Imation. So who are you? If you're a member of the Dark Kings I've probably fished with you a few times before...
