Leo Carillo Report, July 3rd 2006
Who: YakSailor Sr., Jr.
Where: Leo Carillo
When: July 3, 2006, 8:15-11am
Water Conditions: 1.5 ft lowtide, 10 ft visibility, 63°F water temp
Air Conditions: Sunny, wind at 5mph (until 11am), about 73°F
Craft: Hobie Mirage
Setup: Daiwa Capricorn 3500 with 8' graphite rod, 12 lb Stren Fluorescent blue monofilament. P-line flouro. Daiwa 2500, Cajun Red 12 lb mono, on a 7' fiberglass Mr. Big Fish.
Lures: Yellow jig heads with rootbeer orange BigHammers. MORGs. Mike's Extra Strength Shrimp scent.
Target: Bass
Catch: 16 various Rockfish, 20" Calico bass and a starfish. All released.
Got out to Leo this morning, late. There were already 3 yakkers out there and many surfers. Bees were all over the place, and we were careful not to step on any as we launched. We launched dry, (no wetsuit needed), and headed straight for the rockfish area I had pegged on my GPS from the last session. It's an odd spot, as there is really no structure and no fish meter, yet we can pick them off on every cast. A couple of times we had 2 fish fight for the lure all the way to the boat (I heard one say to the other, "Are you gonna finish that?). We tried a few kelpy places, but the structureless rockfish spot produced the most. After we got bored with the rockies I tried a lure the size of a small whale with no takers. We also saw a cattleboat out there, but weren't sure if they were catching anything. I saw something big that looked like a WSB or a thresher shark; casted to it without an answer. We tried the surfing reef with no luck, except a starfish. The landing was easy, except I managed to step on a bee during the brief time I was barefoot after landing. We landed seconds before a surfing class took over the sandy area. The land, sea and air were crowded today- we saw 6 planes fly by with advertisements. Today we'll take a break from fishing.
Here's some pics:
This one put up a nice fight for Austin. Caught it on a weedless double tail Gary Yamamoto MORG with worm hook and bullet sinker:
These guys were all over the place, trying to climb aboard and stow away:
This is the second starfish we've caught on BH's. NO ONE can resist Big Hammers.
It was hard to focus with these guys buzzing around all morning:
It was a great day out there, hope to get out next weekend as well!

Great report John. You guys fish too much, or I fish too little...
These reports are actually keeping me sane when I can't make it out on the water myself...
Keep'em coming!
