Leo Again, 7-8-06

Who: YakSailor Sr., Jr.
Where: Leo Carillo
When: July 8, 2006, 8-11:30am
Water Conditions: 3.5 ft rising tide, 10 ft visibility, 67°F water temp
Air Conditions: Sunny, wind at 5mph, about 77°F
Craft: Hobie Mirage
Setup: Daiwa Capricorn 3500 with 8' graphite rod, 12 lb Stren Fluorescent blue monofilament. P-line flouro. Daiwa 2500, Cajun Red 12 lb mono, on a 7' fiberglass Mr. Big Fish.
Lures: Yellow jig heads with rootbeer orange BigHammers. MORGs. Mike's Extra Strength Shrimp scent.
Target: Bass
Catch: 10 various Rockfish, Calicos and a sheephead. All released.

Got out to Leo this morning, pretty early for us. There were already 6 yakkers out there and 2 charters. Saw Potto there, as usual. We headed out to the spot, but metered some fishy spots along the way and couldn't help but stop and pick off a couple. I heard a guy say that he hadn't caught anything, and I'll bet he didn't have a meter. The uphill current was so strong that you couldn't see the kelp from the surface, and therefore the structure was not obvious. We found a spot with plenty of action:

Austin immediately hooked up with this toothy lass. We didn't have our gripper and neither of us wanted to touch her.

Toothy and parasites all over.

We couldn't stick to one spot due to the current. As soon as we drifted, the bite disappeared. I may try my anchor again next time.

We managed several other fish of the usual fare:

We decided to take the long way home and visit Johnny Rockets for burgers and shakes. On the way, I saved a waypoint that is unskunkable, even for the unluckiest fisherman:

If you Google map it, you'll see. No skunks, guaranteed!

Agoura+$$+No Skunk=Troutdale!!

Actually, not too badly priced if you factor in the cost to stock up on some new trout supplies for a normal lake outting.
Last time the kids were there it took my youngest all of 5 minutes to nail the biggest trout...and my oldest several laps and about an hour to get his only trout.

I still want to hit troutdale with all my heavy shark/tuna gear just to have the pics to prove it.

Sure thing, but I'm not sure if it'll be Saturday or Sunday. I'll be surfing one of those days. I'll post.
