Redondo w/ Yaksailors, SteveO, ODH33
Who: YakSailor Sr., Jr., ODH33, SteveO
Where: Redondo
When: July 15, 2006, 8-11:30am
Water Conditions: -0.1 ft slack LOW tide, 12 ft visibility, 72°F water temp
Air Conditions: Sunny, calm, about 77°F
Craft: Hobie Mirage
Setup: Daiwa Capricorn 3500 with 8' graphite rod, 12 lb Stren Fluorescent blue monofilament. P-line flouro. Daiwa 2500, Cajun Red 12 lb mono, on a 7' fiberglass Mr. Big Fish.
Lures: Megabait, no scent
Bait: Nanosize achovies and sardines (but cheap: $5 !)
Target: Bonito
Catch: 2 Sandbass, 1 perch, 6 short halibut and an octopus. All released.
Our sights were set on Malibu this morning, but after heeding MJ's note at 5am and checking out surfline.com, I decided that the swell and launch would be troublesome at best. Called Dan and Steve and got the OK for plan B, which was only 15 min from Dan's house anyway.
The dock launch was luxurious compared to Malibu and the harbor was glassy. Steve got out ahead of us and scouted out the waters beyond the breakwater. His report was that the swells were BIG. I could hear them crashing about every 15 seconds or so. Glad we opted for the harbor.
We went to the bait dock, loaded up on minnows and started fishing where the meter showed activity. I was hoping to turn these guys onto some fun bonie fishing, but they weren't playing. We actually saw bonito boiling, but they would have nothing to do with the chovies or lures. Luckily, there was more than bones in the harbor. I hooked up on a sandbass with a Megabait, then Austin on a perch and sandbass with a 'dine. We hunted the North end for bones, but found only short butts. The water was really clear and I was actually able to spot a halibut in 12 feet of water. I casted to it, and it actually took the bait! Our yak didn't seem to bother it.
We saw around 5 stingrays, and tried sight casting to them, but no dice. At the landing, we saw a pod of 3 beans swimming around. If I hadn't put away my gear, I would've tried sight casting to them, too! It was a great morning out there today and I hope to fish with you guys again soon!
First fish of the day- some kind of perch:
Second fish-Sandbass on a 2" Megabait:
Dan's Megabaited Sandbass:
SteveO hunting the big one:
Dan, the size limit on bait docks is 30 feet- gotta throw this one back!
Hauling butts:
P.S. Dan, next time bring that awsome bait tank of yours!
