Kona Kayak report July 16th and 29th, 2006.
Like the new look on the site! More kayak info!! Now for the report...
Short and short, ended up only hitting it two days on the yak, first day was a two hour trip out to the light house outside Kealakekua Bay. Two 4 lb. Aku, both landed on a small black silver Rapala Sliver. Thought about using one for bait as it was cleanly hooked with very little blood, but oppted against it, had to get in to get the Whaler ready. Last day of the trip headed out of the bay and south. Found a couple of good high spots with some marks on them. Had some fresh frozen Opelu, so paddled up current of the mark, sent down the 5" bait on a 4'long single wire leader with a 5/0 southern tuna hook, (will replace the hook with a circle next time).Frozen bait was on the dead stick, second rod was using a butterfly jig. Bait rod goes off, but fish comes off. After repositioning, the second drift the dead sick get hit again, this time it sticks. After a short fight up comes my first kayak caught Uku,(Grey Snapper). Weight on the boga grip is 15lbs. Stoked as it is the last fish of my trip.
Good friend Trout joined me for a short time, just sorry we did not jump in the yaks. We fished hard, but from the whaler and jumped on a charter with my friend. No love for the birthday boy Trout, better luck next year!
I did get one nice Ahi(from a boat), night fishing with a neighbor, it was about 150 lbs. Also some other stuff from the Whaler. Next year more yak fishing, finally got two new Prowlers to add to the fleet. TL Rhino
