The One That Didn't Get Away!

Who: YakSailor Sr., Jr.
Where: The Usual

When: Aug 20, 2006, 9:00-Noon
Water Conditions: 4 ft High tide, 10 ft visibility, 69°F water temp.
Air Conditions: Cloudy, 12 mph wind, about 70°F
Craft: Hobie Mirage
Setup: Daiwa Capricorn 3500 with 8' graphite rod, 12 lb Stren Fluorescent blue monofilament. P-line flouro. Daiwa 2500, Cajun Red 12 lb mono, on a 7' fiberglass Mr. Big Fish.
Lures: The usual plastics and Austin's Old Standby

Target : Halibut
Catch: 4 Calicos, 4 rockfish, 1 Halibut, 25". The calis and rockfish released.

Got out there earlier this time: at the crack of 9am. Didn't see Potto...he must've already fished and gone. There were a couple of float tubers there. I hope they made it in OK, as the waves got a lot bigger when we left. The current was strong downhill, but the wind North, so we were really pushed away from the direction of our lures. It made it tough to keep 3/8 oz. sinkers at the bottom, but we tried our best.

Most of the fish were at the bottom, where we were targeting flatties. The rockfish were hitting on the way down, and the bass were hitting as the lure drifted. Since we were only getting rockfish, I decided to move from our usual spot. Good thing, too. As soon as we did, Austin hooked into this halibut and he knew that was what was on the line. I didn't think that we were going to be able to land this fish. It took me 5 tries to net it, and between each try it dove almost to the bottom. It wasn't hooked very well, just on the lip, and I was afraid it would shake the hook. Luckily, Austin kept the like tight, and all ended well.
