I was asked by another get benter on how I do my spectra calculations so I will post to help the rest of you who have similar questions.

This is the way I do it, I am not saying it is the correct way, just the way that has worked for me.

Step1: Know how much mono your reel holds. For the example I will use a trinidad / torium 16 which holds 320yards of 20lb mono.

Step 2: Know what lb test spectra you are going to use. I like to use spectra that is around two line classes higher then the mono I am using. Depending on the size of the reel and how much line I want it to hold I will go up or down some more line classes. If I wanted my trinidad 16 to have a smaller top shot I would choose a higher spectra line class such as 65 or 80. For more capacity I go with 50.

Step 3: Know how thick your spectra is. You can find this information in the powerpro pamphlets that come with the line or on their website at. http://www.powerpro.com/using/specs.aspThe 50 lb spectra that I will be using is the same diameter of 12lb mono.

Step 4 Multiply the yards of mono that hte reel holds (320) By the lb test it holds(20). My answer is 6400.

Step 5: Divide the answer from step 4(6400) by the equivalent mono diameter of your spectra 6400/12=533.3 This means that my reel should hold 533 yards of 12 lb test.

Step 6: Subtract the ammount of spectra backing you will be using. I think 300 yards of spectra should be enough and still leave room for a decent topshot.

(Spectra)300-553( Ammount of 12lb my reel holds) and I get 233 yards for my 30lb mono to fit over my 300 yards of spectra. Now I con vert that 233yards to hold 12lb into yards of 30lb.

Step 7: Multiply the ammountleft over space(233)by the diameter of your spectra(12)

Left over room 223X12( size of spectra) and you get 2796.

Step8: Divide the answer(2796) from the last step by the size of the mono(30).

2796/30(mono) and you get 93.2 yards of 30lb topshot when used over 300 yards of 50lb spectra. When I filled my trinidad 16 I think I got around 95 yards of mono topshot.

My explanation may not be so clear so I will doanother reel without my instructions to see if you can follow along

Reel: Daiwa Sealine 30 Holds 20/295

Backing, Yards and diameter: 300 yards and equivalent to 12lb

Topshot: 30lb

(mono reel holds)20 X 295(Yards reel holds)=5900

5900/12(thickness of spectra)=492( yards of 12lb reel will hold)

492- 300( backing)=192( room for topshot).

192 X 12(size of spectra)=2304 2304/30lb( mono)=77yards of 30lb

Somebody try it out using my directions and post your results. Hopefuly it will help me see where my directions arent clear enough.

Hope this helps,

Batty

i do things a little different. i figure out how long of a topshot i want and using a line counter (shakespeare makes a decent $10 one) i spool that onto my reel first. then i tie the end of the mono to the spectra that i will be using as a backing and spool it to the top. then i unload the reel onto a spare spool. then unload that spool onto yet another spare spool. what this does is turns everything around so that when i respool it back onto the reel, i will have the spectra on first. just make sure yourememberuse about 15yds of mono to anchor the spectra onto the spool to avoid slippage. fill up the reel, and it should be right on point.
