McClanes Fishing Encyclopedia, no longer in print, got mine on ebay for 20.00, is the most definitive book out there.
Or print this out from DFG.

You can also try:

Sport Fish of the Pacific by Vic Dunaway ISBN 0-936240-28-8. It should be available at Borders, Barnes and Noble or even at Sport Chalet. Oh yeah, welcome to GBSF.

Way outdated..but awesome none the less. I've turned the pages of this book a million times over the years.
Not as classic as his Cortez book, but try to find.
"How to fish the Pacific coast; A manual for salt water fisherman" by Ray Cannon.
Pretty interesting to read about how to target Garibaldi, Great White Sharks, and Black Seabass!

If you are just looking to identify your catch get a " Marine sportfish identification" book for california. you can find them at most tackle shops or through NOAA web site, even the california sea grant program has them.
I think I have a couple extra copies I got from working an NOAA sponsored event. PM me your address and I will mail you one for free.

Better yet United Anglers was giving away a book to members not long ago called California Finfish adn Shellfish Identification Book. It is released by the California Department of Fish and Game. ISBN 0-9722291-1-6. Bet you can get it cheap or free from the DFG. Was published in conjunction with thier Fishing Passport Program.

Fish Identification Guides

The above link Fish Identification Guides is provided by California Department of Fish and Game, Marine Region .

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/MRD/fishcard.pdf

The above link Selected Nearshore Fishes of California is a sub link in the Fish Identification Guides. And this one is not bad check out all the sub links. There are also some fantastic websites for fish identification which are usually provided by colleges around the US. Search the web and you might not have to even by a book.

The state of Alaska also has some great sites for identification.
