Have you tried the new ATC Blanks made by Bob Loomis? The Blank for you is BT8025 8' 0", 15-30#, 3/4-4 lure wt., extra fast, 7.5 tip, 0.81 butt size, 7.2 blank wt., list for $135.00 but I could get it for $65.00 plus s/h.

#1. In my opinion (and I am no expert so someone else might correct me), the rod is not meant for tossing baits as far as you wish. If you really want to get some distance, you would be much better off with a lighter tip rod or even a glass rod. A fiberglass rod will load up a lot better than a terremar and give you a lot more distance. With respect to you trying to throw live bait with it, in my opinion, you are not going to want to throw live bait much farther than you already are throwing it. I don't like to heave bait that far for two reasons. 1. I don't want to throw my bait off the hook and 2. I don't want my live bait smacking the water and making my bait all stupid for the first few minutes it is in the water. What I do want is a nice smooth lob cast that doesn't destroy my bait.

#2. When you are throwing plastics and spoons and whatever else you are throwing, you might want to try having the lure farther away from the tip. I think you should try having the lure between 3 feet from the tip, to as far as all the way down to your reel. This is a “pendulum” type cast and helps to load the rod up. Ask a deckhand to show you what I referring to or there is also a video you can get. Inside Sport Fishing has a video called something like “Advanced Casting” You can order it off their web site at http://www.limboland.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ISF&Product_Co de=ISF-ADVANCEDCASTING-DVD&Category_Code=Instructional&Product_Count=2 . It has a pretty good demonstration of what I am talking about. When you start experimenting with different distances away from the tip, you will find a sweet spot that works best with that rod and the lure you are working with at that time. Focus on getting some bend in that stiff terremar and you should start getting some distance in your casting. Hope this helps…

great info here guys... keep it up!

Ive got a few pennies clank'n around in my pocket, so let me throw in a few more cents

throwing baits and jigs, and even plastics (in my opinion) require three different rods. I like a glass rod (7 or 8 ft) for throwing baits (calstar 270, 196, etc), a composite OR glass rod for throwing heavier jigs like megabaits, and irons (8 to 8.5 ft).. something like a Pacbay XG80L, Calstar GF800M, Calstar 6480L, SuperSeeker D8 or LM9. Plastics... I have to use an 8ft graphite rod usually rated something like 12-25lb or 10-20lb.

True about distance from the tip to your jig/lure/bait.... I don't cast baits far either, i don't want to for the same reason the others stated. But jigs and plastics I want to BOMB! ...my happy place is about 12 inches below the tip. I cast with a lot of torque, so it suites me best. But some prefer the hanging/pendulum cast... depends on the angler I guess.

about casting... one thing, be sure to follow threw with your cast. Nice and even.. no jerky motion. Start way back and finish strong... use your thumb and listen to the line ripping off. You can usually hear a backlash building up. If you listen close enough you can prevent a birds nest and actually free it up during mid flight.

ok... ill keep an eye on this thread. Its close to my heart... took me many hours on the piers in Ventura to bust out a huge cast in the clutch.
oh... and wait till you get into night casting.. hahaha, thats a fun learning curve.

oh yeah...

about the custom rod.

Not sure who's doing it for you but $150 sounds too cheap. A good rods parts can cost more than that.. and a good builder is going to want something for his or her time. So.. not sure, but sounds way too cheap. $250 and UP sounds more like it... components and workmanship go a long way.

If your in the area (Ventura) come see me at the shop (fisherman's tackle shop). I'm not going to try to sell you something because I'm getting out of the custom rod business. I'm just making them for the shop now.. and myself . But I have lots of blanks here to pull on and maybe I can help you feel out your way into the proper rod.

OK, enough. I need to go home.

you know like when your shooting hoops like from the free throw line....you follow the ball all the way thru the hoop with a nice follow thru, i like to watch my jig all the way till it hit water...follow thru, keep eye on jig, listen to your line peeling off and adjust your thumb accordingly, it will all come together...

good stuff Mike
