Question custom rod ? graphite composite or e-glass blank

HEllo

getting ready to place an order for a custom rod for my VAn Stall 100 gold, never could find a factory made rod that worked ok for me, sooooo i guess the custom is the way to go
found a rod on the web that looked nice,
8 foot 15-30 lb spinning rod with sharkskin grips and 316 stainless steel and Zirconium guides.

i need to tell him what blank to use, graphite composite or e-glass blank

Quote:
Hi Moses
These are Rainshaddow blanks .. the 8 foot blank is rated for 3/4 to 3 ounce .. we can use a graphite composite blank .. super light 4.5 ounces for just the blank .. and sensitive. or we can use a e-glass blank .. 13.75 ounces just the blank .. the difference is the composite blank is light and sensitive ... the e-glass is heavy and durable ..

You know how you are with your gear .. so you can tell me weather you need a more durable rod or a lighter more sensitive rod .. the composite is just as strong as the e-glass but they are more brittle at the tip .. so if you stick it in a ceiling fan it will be shorter .. if you stick an e-glass in a ceiling fan it would have better chance of not breaking the tip ..
you will like fishing with the composite rod a lot better .. but they are easier to break ..
let me know if you would like the composite or the e-glass

what do you my friends advice, also what other thinks i should ask ? please remember this is my first order for a custom rod and don't know much about them at all

i need it to work for casting good distance, which i still can't do on my Avet SX or MXL , i'm still new to casting conventional reels

Well, I can tell you that there is not much more that I hate when someone shoots down my idea or suggestions, but I have to step in here. I am not sure what type of fishing you do but not many people (at least I don't think) use spinning outfits on the westcoast. Not to say that Van Stall is not a good reel, I am sure it is, but in my opinion, I would save the money and buy a new conventional outfit. If you are simply not used to casting a conventional reel and are worried about backlashes, I would work on your casting with your SX or MXL so that is not an issue anymore. I am sorry if I sound like a jerk, that is not my intention. I just want to give you something to think about because I am in the process of selling all of my old stuff right now because I didn't spend the money on the right stuff in the first place.

As far as your question, I am going all composite. Much easier to fish with. Just have to be carefull and don't high stick your rod. I hope this helps and doesn't make me sound like a jerk

Agree with Brian, Composite.
Your builder is reccomending some nice equiptment. The Rainshadow Blanks and the SS/Zicronium guides are primo components.
Check out the Rainshadow site below and ask what specific blanks he is reccomending than you can check them out yourself. You might want to take a look at the SW1087, it is longer at 8' 10" but it is also a Moderate Fast action which I personally like. It affords the long casting ablilty because of the length and the moderate fast action is a lot eaiser on the angler. Have fished 15 to 25 lb line on this blank and am vary happy with its performance. But Composite for sure. And like Brian says , watch the high sticking.

Like the guys said, it really depends on the type of fishing you intend to do with this rod and reel combo. Sounds like casting is a top issue though... the rainshadow blanks are nice but Ive been building a bunch of casting rods lately and using the Graphite USA 80MAG 15-30lb and the new TADY TL-85M 12-25lb. These are both graphite rods, great for casting all day.

The GUSA 80MAG, hands down... defiantly the best power to physical weight ratio...

in my opinion.

ps... dont be too hard on yourself when it comes to casting an AVET reel. I don't care what anyone tells you.. they have NO cast control what-so-ever. Best casting reel around in the right hands. I love them.
Just practice practice practice.

Unhappy Thank you Walt and Brian

i use it for saltwater fishing,

i love my Van Stall, it has been good to me and i have it for long time, i would love to use it just can't find a good rod for it at the stores... it will be nice if i can find a good rod and even if i get good at casting any of my Avet reels i will keep it close by

conventional reels
my good friend i have no shortage of fishing reels, atlist that's what my fishing friends and the wife say

my problem is backlashes not able to cats farrrrrrrrr on a conventional reel
i do try to use my Avet SX , have been "practicing" 2 or 3 times a week, i take it w/ me any time i'm going out fishing, just like yesterday on Sea Angler wan i was tired of sanddab fishing i start "practicing", will getting good at it, 5 out of 10 i can cast good but not far at all, only 40' to 45'

i have it on a Shimano TMC-X80H 8' 15-30Line 1-4oz Heavy action: Extra Fast rod, it's a nice rod and love the way it works, but i can't cast, did change the line 4 or 5 times
at first it was #16 Cajun that did not work at for me
took it fishing 2 or 3 times, it was nice and strong did not have any
memory, but could only cast 2 out of 10
then i changed it to P-line #20 as it's worked ok, could only cast 15' to 20'
then i changed it to #12 and i was getting 4 out of 10
now i have a spectra #40 on it, if i don't wish to cast over 25' to 30' casting it's fine i get 7 out of 10 but if i tray for more 45' and more i only can cast 5 out of 10

i start casting w/ a ambassador 3500-c3 2 speed - took me 5 or 7 days to learn and start casting, and i can cast 8 out of 10 w/ no problems up to 75'+, i can do the same on my Shimano scorpion1501 & scorpion Metanium XT, I can even cast OK w/ my Shimano corsair cs 400, but i cant cast my avet sx,

what i'm i doing wrong

in any case i like to have a nice rod for my Van Stall, it's a nice reel

Thank you Walt and Brian

Thanks

I guess right hands is the key word i have seen people cast SX over 75', it worked for them, it will work for me also , but at the same time i like to go fishing and use it for Calico, YT, Barracuda and so onn
i love Avet and i will do my best to work on it to make it work for me on casting, i'm just getting frustrated ... that's all ....

the rod builder is charging me $170 + Shipping, is that a good price ??
most of the people i know are charging over $250 for a same or similar setup

Thanks for the info

Moses

Quick question, what are you trying to cast with the SX and Terremar?

mostly bait that the boat will have on hand + the lures, metal jigs, Spoons, some plastic...

most of the time this year it has been anchovy or sardines on a fly line

moses, that stick might be a little to fast. i have that rod and its fairly stiff. oh, refering to the Teramar.
Especially if your flylining or casting bait with an egg sinker.
