Instead of the Calstar 700M, go with the 700MH or H for 40#. I am using the SS 6470 and it works pretty good. Check the boards for the TLD 2 speeds, I've seen some really good deals in the past and they should be fine for what you're planning. I have the TLD 30 2 speed which I use for trolling(rarely gets used).

Not to jack this post but I hear lot of talk about 2-speed reels. Is it neceasary or does it just make for easier fishing?

2 reasons for a 2-speed on a 5-day

1. If you go to Guadalupe and you are surface fishing, you need to get your YFT fish in before the great whites get it. A 2-speed facilitates getting your fish to the boat.

2. Dropper-loop for island yellows and/or groupers require that you immediately get the fishies' nose turned away from the rocks ASAP. Again, the 2-speed with spectra and a short top shot helps in this process. Low gear and no line stretchage.....and then you still have the sharks to deal with at Guadalupe.

While I was being high-fived for turning a yellow that I hooked on the iron at the bottom (but still fighting it halfway up) .....'POOF!'..... no fishie, no iron, only a shorter topshot. Probably just a little 25# class YT....a mere snack for whitey. Lesson learned: it dont count until its gaffed AND ON BOARD.

seeker m660 - tld30 2-spd (60 spectra) - 50lb and 60lb

Then i have to come up with a 2-speed and a calstar 700m

What do you think?

Eric
Eric with what you have this is what i would do...

TOR 16 - 50# spectra short floro or mono 30# top shot
yellowtail special - 60# short floro or mono 40# top shot
AVET SX - 30# spectra straight to the hook!
tld 30 - 80# spectra short 60# top shot.

you can change out your top shot every day. you can also change mono to floro quickly if the fish get line shy. by short top shot i mean 25 to 100 ft. I love tossing jigs on a long rod so i will be taking my 9'6 ulua and 870 2 speed on my 5 day. have fun take tons of pics and let us know how you do.

Eric,

Before you go out and buy a 2 speed reel....borrow one.

Tell me the date and boat you are going on and there will be one waiting for you.

My guess is that you are going out of San Diego.

Fenwick 270 - Avet 5.1 SX - 25lb
Seeker A970 - Torium 16 (w/spectra) - 30lb
Calstar 700m - Yellowtail Special - 40lb
seeker m660 - tld30 2-spd (60 spectra) - 50lb and 60lb

I have a 700M and TLD 20 or 30 or both 2 speeds you can use.....just bring em back in one piece
