Rapala just for trolling?

Hey guys, I just ran across this website and am pretty new to fishing too, but hope to jump into it and take it as far as I can.

There's a question I've been wondering about. A couple of days ago I was talking to a guy in a tackle shop and mentioned some of the setup that a buddy told me about using. One of the things I mentioned was that this friend had been doing some fishing with a Rapala lure. "Oh, so he was trolling," said the guy in the tackle shop.

I didn't make a big deal out of it at the time, but actually I think my friend told me he'd been doing some casting with a Rapala. So my question for you all is, is a Rapala (the original one I guess) mostly used for trolling?

The ones I know are generally too light for their size to cast properly and they are indeed mostly used to trolling. I have seen guys casting and I think you do get a heavier one made for casting, but probably the answer is that there are more suitable things to cast with.

I troll 'em, I also find that they run better if you either remove the forward treble hook or rubberband it flat to the belly, they tend to run better.

great choice of bait lure.

the salt water series are great for trolling. caught all different kinds of species with um.
the fresh water series are great also for casting or trolling.
i trolled the x rap black/silver color with red buck tail at silverwood and nearly caught limits on stripers.

Casting or trolling A Rapala is a great lure, If your fishing open water trolling will work great. If the barrie's or bones are around, and you have located them on the troll then you can cast for them, its crazy fun on lite tackle. Bonito are getting pretty thick right about now, Have fun don't be afraid to experiment.

Take a 1 or 2oz banana weight and tie it to you main line then run a 18" to 2 foot leader and then your rapala. Works great for casting on a surf pole or 7+ footer as the weight will get the line out there then help sink out your lure as you retrieve it in.

Same set up works great on floaters too and let the weight set on the bottom and your plug will float off the bottom. Retrieve as fast or as slow as you like for the presentation you want to give.

Rapala: not just for trolling anymore hehehe.
