I would consider at least a 9ft rod. You can cast further with it than with an 8ft.

That rod is a little light for irons. I think it is rated 12-25? It will work for plastic or live bait on the calicos, but if you hook up a decent yellow or try to really toss a decent sized iron you might be in trouble. I would suggest a Terramar TMC-80H rated 20-40, Seeker 270H-8 rated 15-40, or a Calstar 800M rated 20-50? I use the first 2 and am very happy with them. I don't like rods longer than 8' mostly because of transportation and storage issues. The tip always seems to break!

The TMC80MH is rated 15-30 and has x-tube grips. It'll be fine for smaller iron like Tady C's and probably 45's too.

I have a TMC80MH with am ABU GARCIA Record #60 tosing plastics, small surface irons, sardines and anchovies and works good for me really good but for yellows you are defenitly need 20-40 and up for those mossbacks they fight good and they get big. Teremar, Taulus 20-40 should be really good and if you want to try Calstar and Seeker they reallly work aswell.

i got a tmc80h and i use it for throwing surface irons with a saltist 30th. love my combo. i also got a ulua 10' with a newell p338 and i find it easier to throw with a 8 foot rod than a 10 foot and its easier to get the fish in. you get a nice workout with the ulua.
