DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW WELL THE NEW DAIWA SALTIST REEL COMPARE TO THE SHIMANO TORIUM. SPECIFICALLY SALTIST 40,SHIMANO TORIUM 30. IM PLANNING TO USE IT(SALTTIST) FOR ROCKFISHING AND MAYBE SOME YELLOW FINS? ANY INFO WILL BE HELPFULL.

i havent owned either. the general consensus seems to show that the torium is tried and true even though it has only been out for a short time. the saltist is still new so its going to take a while to see how well it performs. but i have no doubt that it will hold its own against the torium. however, shimano's customer service is still much better than daiwa's. daiwa is getting better (not to mention other companies as well), but u can usually be sure with shimano.

with that being said, the saltist is prettier. hehehe. too bad pretty dont catch fish.

I havent yet played with a Saltist either but I plan to at the Fred Hall show this weekend. My guess is that they are close to the Torium but like Pecsador said, you cannot match Shimano Customer Service.

You could practically slam that reel on the ground and send it back to Shimano for a new one. I would like to see if Daiwa would be willing to do the same.

The Saltist is a pretty reel, dont get me wrong. I like how it looks and will let ya know how it feels after Sunday.

I have to go with the Saltist on this one. Yes, I know that i havent even tried a saltist yet but based on the features I go with the saltist. It is actualy all metal, unlike shimano who tried to put in graphite sideplates and cover it up. It also has a freespool lever that is made out of METAl and not plastic like the shimano reels so its going to be a little harder to break it. I also just hate the dartanium drags that the shimanos come with. The diawas dont run dry drags either ( I love dry drags) but I' d take them over darts anyday. I think you should compare teh torium 30 to the saltiga 50

Shanttu, Don't be afraid to suggest a reel just because someone doesn't like it. If you like it then thats your opinion and there is nothing wrong with that. We wont beat up on you like other boards just because you are different lol

P.S. daiwa customer service has been very helpful to me and they are probably about as good as shimano. I don't know what they woudl say if you returned a saltist that was run over buy a car( who would do that?) but in other areas that I have needed help on they have been there for me.

hey batty, im not completely sure on this, buti coulda sworn that the side plates on the torium are stamped or cast aluminum. not graph. either way, i still like the looks of the saltist a lot more. but there is one thing to look out for. if they made the saltist that much like the saltiga, check the drags. i have heard and seen that the saltigas are not capable of locking up the drag. i think this has to do with the fact that they were designed for use with spectra lines, giving it a little buffer for the shock of setting the hook. some might think thats a good thing, some think its a bad thing. but i saw the guy tighten the drag all the way down. and hold the spool with his hand as he cranked against it. i dont care either way, but i know youre mr drag master and all. just thought id bring that one out for ya hehehe.

I have to go with the saltist. They have an incredible freespool. The turners by my house just got them in and I got a chance to take a look at them. Also I would feel more comfortable with longrange spooling on the saltist. The gear train and drag was devoloped from the saltiga and you cant go wrong with that. The only thing I think ththe torium has on the saltist is the handle. The saltist has a hard plastic handle but thats no big deal.

pescador, Shimano trys to hide the graphite sideplate by ocer4ing it with a thin piece of metal. What bothers me is that they don't put that in their specs. Says metal frame how many bearings so and so handle but nothing on the fraphite sideplate.

And about the drags, I couldn't care less about how much mroe drag X reel gets then Y reel. To me all I care about is a smooth consistent drag. If It can do that an only have about 12-15lbs of drag that is fine for me.
