I have a daiwa saltist stt30t which I love. Any recommendations for the maximum line weight? It claims to have 22 lbs. of drag at max. It's too easy these days to 'over-line' a reel with braid.

just set the drag to the WEAKEST rating on your setup. i would venture to say you are not going to be using straight braid on your setup. you should have some kind of leader, beit a short mono/fluro leader or a long topshot. whatever the rating on that is, that should be what your drag is set to... UNLESS your rod is rated to a weaker line than what you are running through it.

you can put 1000lb spectra on that reel if you wanna (its just a waste of money and line capacity). but if you have a 30lb leader on a 20-40lb rod, thenyour drag should be set to about 7-10lbs of pressure.

hope that answers your question.

Line should be more geared to what you are after not just what a reel can handle. Depending on your target fish you shouldn't need more then 30 for all most anything SoCal has to offer. Next is where if cattle boating you should run a little heavier if you are a weekender with lots of people you want to get the fish in faster so you are going to punch the drag up a bit but every where else you can fight it for the most part so again match the line to the target. In this case the 30 will handle allot but in others you then need to make sure the reel can handle what line you are using to target what fish. Then comes the poll.

For the 30 out here I would go 25 max in clear. You can still hit big yellows but rerig to go after flatties is in the plan any more and you are getting a bit to big in my way of thinking.
