Captain Castaic Gets His Fish

Captain Castaic and I hit Castaic Lake today in search of largemouth and striper. Got to the lake around 7:45 and it was already full of boats. Turns out there is another tournament going on. Is it just me, or does there seem to be a tournament there every Saturday? We started out by working some of our favorite points with the dropshot and swim baits. I am not in the water five minutes when I get a nice strike, but I failed to set the hook. Hey, it was early and my reflexes were slow. Not to worry, if I am getting hit that quick, there will be a lot more to follow.

There is still snow on the mountains above the lake.

An hour later, with absolutely no hits at all, we decided to check out the buoy line to see if the striper were awake. Seems the rest of Castaic had the same idea as there were already ten boats back there. The dink fest seems to have slowed, but they are still there. It will probably be at least another month until that place goes off.

Buoy Line Madness

We spent too much time back there without hooking into anything worth mentioning, and then decided to head back to the fish arm to chase the largemouth. We pull into a cove and hear a noteworthy splash at the back of the cove just under a small overhang. We pull in close and see a nice two to three pound trout swimming in some shallow water back there with three other smaller trout. Of course we left all of the trout gear at home, but it was nice to see some big trout so far away from the ramp.

The Overhang Where the Trout Were Hanging

After killing off another hour, we were still fishless and the Captain needed to get his fish. We bailed at about one and went to the one sure spot to land some decent fish (the McDonalds on Parker). Finally, after a day of futility, the Captain got to filet his fish (or is that Filet o’ fish).

The weather was nice out there, but the wind picked up at times moving us off of spots that we were trying to fish. Every cove was filled with a boat, but at least the sun was out. Hopefully we will have more luck next time. Pyramid is calling.

For those of you who made it to the bottom of this fishless post, we have included a "Where's Waldo?" like photo for you. I wanted a picture of my rig and Captain Castaic decided not to get out of the photo, so I leave you with this last picture entitled, "Where's the Captain?". He is in there somewhere.

(Hint - Look for the red hat)
