Lake Cachuma 02/10/08

My gf and I went up to Lake Cachuma to try our luck at landing some trout. Been a while since we've been up to the lake, but I've always had luck landing decent size trout.

Got up there around 0830 spoke with the boat rental attendant. He said trout fishing has been amazing lately in the Santa Cruz bay area trolling rapalas on the surface to about 15ft. One of the boat rental deck hands also said a gentleman a couple days prior landed a 5lb trout at the point from shore. The deck hand mentioned that Calavares had planted some large trout.

So I get the rental boat set up and head for the Santa Cruz bay area. Once I arrive I begin drifting nightcrawlers on the surface and power bait at 20ft. And what do you know 20 minutes after dropping lines in the water my gf gets a hit on her nightcrawler rig and lands a nice 2lb rainbow. We continue to drift fish from Santa Cruz Bay towards Cachuma Bay. We continued to get hits but no takers, this continued for an hour and a half. When finally my gf lands another bow around the same size as the first. I unfortunately wasnt even getting a nibble on my power bait so I changed over to nightcrawlers and kept it at 20ft.

Throughout the rest of the day we continued to get hits and misses but landed a total of 6 trout ranging from 1.5-3.o.lb The majority of the fish were caught between Santa Cruz point and Bobcat Canyon drifting nightcrawlers on the surface with light line (4lb).

Well fellas I did take pics but unfortunately for me they were taken on my cell phone that ended up on the bottom of the lake. Dumb me stuck it in my sweater pocket and it fell out when I was netting a bow.
Next time I promise there will be pics! Im gonna hit Cachuma again in a week and fish the point and the entrance to Harveys Cove. Heard the trout are hitting in those areas from shore, renting a boat all the time can get expensive $100+ for the day. Might as well save up and buy my own. Anyway tight lines!

Nice report. Been wanting to do Cachuma myself for quite awhile. How's the water level at the lake now? I
I cruised by on Hwy 150 last August and it was all green and very low. I'm sure the rains have helped some.

Wavehopper,
With all the rain we received it brought the lake up to capacity, Cachuma received so much runoff from the rain it began spilling over. Check this link out from KEYT Lake Cachuma Fills and Spills | Santa Barbara's News, Weather, and Sports | KEYT Headlines

Nice job out there. Thanks for the info.

I have never fished Cachuma but have always wanted to check it out. Maybe I'll just have to get on up there.
