Harbor Patrol's first job is to preserve safe navigation of the harbor. Most harbors have very restricted fishing areas, that are not enforced unless people become obnoxius because lets be honest there are more important things to do with limited assets.
I can tell you I have little sympathy for guy's who lay unlit nets that I can see when I am navigating a channel in my sailboat, or who run their unlit or poorly lit skiffs back and forth in front of a 30 foot boat that can't turn quickly and has right of way.
Sorry I hoop, but I have also nearly been pushed into the rocks avoid hitting a skiff or kayak. In my area only one out three Kayaks have a light.
I don't know Ventura harbor patrol but Dana Point and Newport Harbor are just fine.

BEFORE this season? My answer would be NO. I only saw HP cruise by two times last season between Jan-Mar and we went out a couple times each week (usually week nights). It didn't bother me because we never needed their assistance nor ran into problems or "conflict" as some people call it. But to hear them say that they came by each night pissed me off because we didn't see them most of the nights that we went out. No way... not after dark. Nor did we see them while cruising the keys. I think we might have seen HP the night of the boat parade last December!!
I haven't been out yet this season because of all of this BS. Not interested in being forced to hoop out past the wall some ridiculous distance. Have only hooped CIH this season, so if your poll is asking for opinion on RECENT activities in Ventura Harbor, then I cannot answer it truthfully and will refrain from taking the poll.
I would only hope that they are patrolling now. That's their job and I believe lack of doing so last season is what caused most of this crap in the first place.

thats the problem with this poll. People are only refering to "lobster season", its obvious Ding that you were lookin to get all No's on this because people have lobster season on their minds already with the current lobster dilema

The poll does not ask "Has the Harbor Patrol fulfilled their obligation of enforcement on the water during lobster season?" Again you are looking for something in the question that is not there it is a general question in nature, it is not a trick question. I am sorry if you feel it is a slanted or bias question and I hope everyone would vote their conscience.

????? hum well if the poll says "Has the Ventura Harbor Patrol fulfilled their obligation of enforcement on the water" isn't patrol of the wall part of that???
If so and they didn't do a good job of it then isn't that part of their obligation.
I get that you are saying there is so much to do so with out knowing about theft, vandalism, water moving and navigation problems they have intervened in that the only thing people are caring about is hooping. People don't see the little things I get it Strawberry but all means everything.
I doubt that any law enforcement agency would get a yes to this question. The difference is that other law enforcement agency's don't just close down a park PERMANENTLY because there is an issue there. They beef up patrols, give less warnings and make more arrests and give more tickets. That would be their J O B !!! that is the point of the poll and it is right on tract.

carni, your not stupid at all. Your a smart guy. Do you honestly think that HP has not done their job IN ITS ENTIRETY, including all the things that really are important to the harbor other than hooping??
They do a fantastic job and becuase of the stupid hooping deal, your all gonna say they do their jobs poorly...
The messed up one thing, hooping
Carni, you were an officer of the law werent you. So if you werent enforcing something minor to the community, like j-walking for example, all of a sudden you are doing a completely terrible job?? give me break
the point of the poll was to generate poor review of the HP becuase of the recent dilema.
PLEASE DONT RESPOND TO ME ON THIS, I JUST WANTED TO VOICE MY OPINION. IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE COUNTERED W/ AN ARGUEMENT.

Strawberry if you would read a little more and talk a little less it might help ya out JUST a wee bit. Your jaw has GOT to be sore from all the abuse it is getting from those knee jerk responces.

unfortunately you have said loud and clear what your intentions are. You want YOUR opinion heard and nothing from anyone else. To bad that this is a posting board for the process of information not a one sided editorial. You need to goto the harbor masters website for that.

i thought that was for moderators and their editing and getting their last word in before they close a post.
Sorry im the only one that calls out stupidity on here. If you dont agree with me fine, take it with a grain of salt.
My applause to the harbor patrol for keeping our wonderful harbor, too bad they made 1 mistake and everyone has to tell them they are incompetant. Like i said, i just think there is more to the harbor than hooping.

if the harbor patrol and police did there jobs in the first place, this would have never come down like this. I hooped for lobster last year almost more than anyone, and saw the harbor patrol only two times on the water! TWO TIMES!!! NEVER have I seen anyone given a Field sobriety test... and yes, lets face it guys... alcohol was one of the biggest reasons for people getting a bit wild in previous year.

I was out there on my yak that night I had a cell phone on me I called the Sheriffs which patched me to the Harbor Patrol and finally get them to come out.

I myself had to pull a capsized person from the water last season and tow his boat in due to the lack of HP presence.

As for our incident, it wasn't 'near fatal' at all. It would have been due to hypothermia sitting on the breakwall if Pineapple hadn't called the Ventura PD to light a fire under the HP's ass to pick up the phone and go out there and get us.

I believe that the criticism that this was done too quickly are legitimate.

I can continue if you so desire and I have saved the good stuff for last perhaps you may want to rethink your statement?
