Angry OH MY GOD

originally posted by purplecrm on bloody decks

"well this sucks but needs to be told. this morning in westcove the reserch skiffs for csun, laid out and collected gill nets . this resulted in the mortal destruction of hundreds of heavily egg laden white seabass, as well as every other concievable species swimming in the cove. these fish were thrown back dead as bycatch. The big question i have is who gives these guys the power to gillnet the cove just as these fish show up in mass to spawn. I was in the cove yesterday and saw hundreds of seabass balled up in spawn mode. These fish looked like a giant bait ball free swimming through the cove. It was a beautiful site. now the same fish were killed in the name of reseach to see how viable our waters are. Well i can tell you they sure were in good shape before the carnage. By the way we have 40 min of video capturing all of this. Need to make copies to send to fish and game and several other agencies that might be able to stop futher damage done to our ever depleted resorces. I for one am sick to my stomach that this shit still takes place in the name of science. For who? what kind of science wipes out a huge area of fish just to see if it is health. Not any more. These idiots just killed millions of our fish to be . The seabass never got a chance to spawn. Oh and is it ok to kill eveything else including at least one black seabass ...Horseshit. Anyways we need ideas and contacts to send the video to try to put a end to this kind of research. Im still in shock over this it was a big blow to west cove and our fishery. please let me know if any of you have any good ideas to get this lunacy stopped."

WOW

There is also an audio report up on the 976-Tuna website from Captain Tino on the Phantom telling you about this also. Here's the link, 976-TUNA

Yep, I heard about this too. The Phantom saw the whole thing happen.

This is pretty bad.

Ya read that too. The guy writing it I am not sure he really knows what he is talking about. Not saying it is right or that it didn't happen but subsequent responses were less then promising. I do have to agree that there was no call for any of it and certainly shows that so called scientist or more to the truth "want to be's" some times do more harm then good. Would love to see the video and see what really happened and the reaction to it from the individuals doing the netting and their handlers.

im with carni, im interested in seeing the video. especially since i studies fisheries at csuci. stories can really change

like i always say; the people managing our fisheries are a bunch of monkeys dressed up like scientists.

personally, i have no problem with gillnets. You guys know im a fisherman and used to fish gillnet. But they should never be fished inside somewhere like west cove or in any spawning ground. Same reason they took longlines out of parts of florida. It makes no sense.
second, i'd like to know how far off the island they were, how deep. Commercial gillnets must be 3 miles off the coast and 1 mile i believe off the islands.
if they were in close in the kelp, thats absolutely mind boggling

reminds me of when they use trawling for fish counts... stupid

Response from CSUN, which was posted on BD:

Anthony,

This scientific gill netting has always been under contract to the California Department of Fish and Game and has been required BY LAW by the California Coastal Commission since 1985. It is required under the permit to release white seabass from the Carlsbad Hatchery (and capture and hold brood stock). Almost 3/4s of the total recovered hatchery fish have come from releases at Catalina Harbor indicating how absolutely essential this sampling was. In truth, these are small meshed (1" to 2" mesh) nets designed to capture juvenile white seabass. We catch almost no large white seabass. They catch other small species for sure, but by-catch is minimal due to small mesh and short length (150' of each net). We set eight, small nets for necessary replication. Our nets, even combined, are much smaller and shorter than the commercial nets which used to plunder the nearshore areas, daily, prior to 1994.

We have learned a great deal from this long-term monitoring program. I have attached three of our publications based on the data collected.

This critical 13 year sampling is now ending. CF&G has cut the program due to lack of funding. June 2008 was the last trip. After this, we will not have any idea what is going on out there.

1" to 2" mesh damn! What is that like a mackeral gillnet.

pretty interesting how they have cut so many programs within dfg due to lack of funding however every year they come up with price increases and new things to charge us for. sorry guys, i'll stop ranting
