HALIBUT 101

well i thought id put this post out to help others and myself. hopefully fellow GBers with some good tips will participate .ive caught halibut the last few years only one way which (I THINK) is the carolina rig, which is 2oz slide sinker, swivel ,30" leader and then bait hook w/trouble about 4" below the bait hook ,which is called the trap i believe ,with a live sardine which is all we have up here right now(PORT SAN LUIS AREA).i havnt caught 1 legal yet this year but every one around seems to be . ive tried big hammers, got a shorty ive drifted the pea patch up here where it is supposed to real good but after a couple o hrs w/no results shot out to the rocks to limit out on rock fish. when using swimbaits i cast as far as i can then reel in at different speeds a couple of jerks here and there .so if im doing somthin wrong let me know, or if there is a better rig set-up to use i'd like to try. im sure there is a bunch of people like myself who would benefit greatly from your responses ,from rigs to lures to fav colors and size crankbaits .hope to get a bunch of responses ,greatful for every one thanks again......: gtown........

Look in the "Tips and Tricks" section. There is a good article on Halibut.

coastal halibut fishing

The tips and trick forum has a bunch of useful stuff on different ways to fish and fishing related topics.

Tips and trick is the link but it is right below the sportfishing in the top line next to the arcade.

The treble below has allot of names from trap to stinger to cheating heheh. Some times I run it other times I don't, I have found that shorts tend to hit the stinger with legals being able to eat the whole fish. Just my observation no real proof. I have run both the Carolina rig but prefer a tied in line of floro that the hook attaches to and then run a weight on the bottom line. Seems to have worked better for me but still no legals yet.

For bounce ball fishing, use the rig illustrated in the California Halibut Fishing article except change the main swivel with a three-way swivel, then tie on a 8 oz. to 2 lb sinker on about a 10" leader. The hook leader should be 18"-30" and then either a single #4 to #1/0 hook or the same trap setup that you described. Sometimes I use a trap with a smaller single hook on the bottom instead of a treble if the fish get picky and don't bite very hard.

I have never had any luck with a sinker below the bait, as Drew mentioned above, but that doesn't mean you won't either.

However you fish them(except bounceballing), always have a deadsticked dropshot rig in the water. Either a zoom fluke or a gulp jerk shad. The deadsticked dropshot works the same way as a commercial's "Hammer" setup would.
