Goin to Avila Bay

In a few weeks towards the end of July, a friend and I will be going up to Avila Bay for a 3 day weekend. We figure to head up midday from work on a Thursday and get on a boat Friday up there at Port San Luis and also on Saturday in Morro Bay. That leaves Thursday night and Sunday morning for some pier/shore fishing. I've been to Port San Luis pier once before and Avila was closed but it appears to be open again. We'll probably try one or both of these places but the shore fishing looks really fishy as well. Any ideas or advice on where to go or any tips/tricks for that area? I've only been there once and didnt do much fishing so I don't know the area much at all and I think I was like 10 the last time I went out on a boat out of Morro Bay as well (back when you could fish deep for rockfish and used a Penn Senator 9/0 with 80 lb dacron and a power handle and rod seat thing...I'm staring at those two setups right now as well and you guessed it...just collecting dust and hasnt been used in forever). Any ideas?
