| I'd like to say that the crew did an exceptional job. The fish was fought and landed picture perfect. These bigger grade fish really take everybody operating together in perfect unison, otherwise it's just another one that got away. This fish was mouth hooked, not gut hooked, and we did him on the stand up gear in 2 hours. The fight featured 4 jumps where the fish had a MINIMUM of 10 feet of air underneath him. The fish was 10'2" fork length, so there were times when the nose of this fish was at least 20' out of the water. The fish also sounded to 700-800 feet in mere seconds and would then rocket up just as fast. When it would head shake, it would cause the angler (Jimmy) to lurch violently one way or the other.
None of us really cared about the cash. Ya, it would have been nice no doubt. But it was really about the fight. Being a part of all the bigger grade fish is special, as they are all unique and all fight so differently. We've been very fortunate that 3 of our last 4 fish have all been very nice fish, and they were all great battles. This one really takes it to another level entirely though. I don't think I'll ever look at a 300-500 lb Mako the same way again.
I'd like to thank Matt, (matmetician) for helping on the carving, arranging the crane, etc. Also, I really appreciate Eric at Eric's Tackle in Ventura for carrying the terminal tackle that I needed on short notice. Dude carries a good assortment of serious terminal tackle. Normally I have everything and then some, but was running short on the larger crimping sleeves for my monster wind ons, and Owner Jobu 11/0 hooks. He had them.
