Catalina/Paddy Hopping 8/2/08

Based on a tip from Nick on the Dee Dee Marie we made a run to a spot on the backside of Catalina in hopes of catching a yellow or two. We were soaking baits by 6am in a ripping uphill current, but we couldn't get anything to go. There were numerous other PB'ers in the area along with a few sporties, but no one was having any luck either. We stuck it out for a few hours before deciding to try another spot. We relocated to the east end near Church Rock where we proceeded to land a number of calicos. Unfortunately that's not what we were looking for, so we went offshore looking for some paddies. We started our search at the 277 on to the 209 and finally the 14. We spotted no less than 10 nice paddies, but the fish we saw were a couple of baby yellows. Most of the paddies had plenty of bait, but unfortunately no fish were to be had. We did see some porpoise and did a little trolling in hopes of picking off a stray yellowfin or two. No luck there either. All told we put in over 150 miles! The effort was there, but the rewards were not. Despite the lackluster results we had a great time and we'll probably do it again next week. FYI the water temps ranged from 69-72 degrees on the outside and the wind was never a factor.

Jeff Im thinking of trailering down to oceanside or dana, head south a ways... we did pretty good on the dodos when they were here in .06. Let me know, with a couple boats we can cover more ground save fuel .....lol
Lee you too man....

Well sorry to hear the fish didn't want to play but at least you had a good time. I am headed down that way next week or end if things work out maybe we can get something going. I am looking to put some dodo's on the boat if at all possible but we will see what mother nature has in store for the coming days.

I will probably head out on Saturday, so send me a PM if you're in the area and maybe we can set up a buddy boat venture. It may be a little early for the dodos up here, but if the water temps remain stable who knows.

Depending on my schedule this week, I might be up for that as well. Let me know if you're going.
