Team NBU on Young's Tackle Charter 0802~03 (First String)

Overview:
This trip is the second consecutive trip hosted by Young's Tackle (La Palma) and Sponsored by Calstar and Kencor that Team NBU has participated.
Unfortunately, due to prior reservations, not all members of Team NBU could go - it was just me and Bob.
Both Bob and I agreed, that this charter, this boat, this crew...we are gonna make these trips an annual thing!

Short Story:
The target species was yellowtail and dorado. "Run n' Gun" paddy hopping was the technique for both days.
There were a lot tangles, but it's kinda expected when you're drifting past a kelp paddy.
Everybody got fish and I think for the most part, everybody had fun.

Long Story:

Friday, August 1
13:00 Bob texts me - I'm gonna try to leave the office at around 3pm.
Translated: I'm gonna be late.

15:30 Bob texts me - I'm leaving the office
Translated: I'm gonna be really late....

17:48 Bob finally gets to my house - original plan was for 5pm...

-- Load Up and GO!! --

19:40 After a few stupid mistakes by me - I guess I was a little tired from work...we finally get to the landing. Well sorta....

It was a completely packed...uh...parking lot. It seems as though several boats were late to arrive, which means there is a ton of people who have yet to load up their trucks and leave and opening the lot.
After watching a few verbal...uh...conversations I decided that this situation wasn't going to improve.

20:44 After an hour in the lot and no improvement on the situation, I decided to take my chances on parking over at the overflow lot.
I pull into the overflow lot and find ONE spot left!! WOO-HOO!!

21:00 We were supposed to load up on the First String - but the boat was not here yet.
21:30 Finally we load up. Friendly faces, familiar faces and there's Mac Daddy and Robin (Owner, Young's Tackle).

-- I go to sleep by 11pm.

Saturday, August 2
5:00 I wake up and see a few guys on the deck already. It's still pitch dark. Didn't hear much "FRESH ONE!!" shouting, so I drained the dragon and went back to sleep.
6:30 I wake up and this time I decided to stay up. Slowly people start waking up and coming up on deck.

7:00 The fun starts. We get the trollers out and head out in search of hospitable paddies.
8:30 ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!! FISH ON!!!!

-- As always, from here I lose track of time...

We pick up a couple YTs and Dodos.
Move on....

It was really picky fishing. It seemed as though the YTs and Dodos were not really biting. We would get the bait out and get a few bites.
And those few bites were enough to create pandemonium on deck as lines would criss-cross all over the place.
There were quite a number of lines "shaved", a number of "I'll cut myself out of this tangle" and a lot of "move to the left!!" or "move to the right!!"

Bob was getting frustrated.
There were bananas on the boat.
Bob needed to cleanse the mojo...yeah, you know what's coming!! !!

I had landed 2 YTs and 1 Dodos by the of the day.

Bob had 1 YT.

*That's the same fish!! !!

It seemed that overall, for the majority of the YTs and Dodos, they were on the small side.
Check this YT out. I were a size 9 shoe...

The deck.

Sunday, August 3
6:30 We wake up, set the trollers out again and HERE WE GO!!

The weather has been wonderful both these days.
Here's Robin getting ready for the sun.

Do you think he's ready for the kabuki??

We would again pick up a few here....a few there...tangles, saw offs and jumpers.
But I think the highlight of the day was seeing real wild Orcas.
It was a religious experience...
My wife and I go to Sea World every other year. We've had dinner sitting next to Shamu's tank.
This experience completely tops it all!!!

15:00 It's time to head back to San Diego. I estimate that we were approximately 60-80 miles south.

This day, Bob finally landed his "real" YT!! Yep, he did it on a Kencor Inshore Rod that he won on our last charter!!

I managed to land another YT...bigger than yesterday.

And another Dodo...yep, bigger than yesterday.

As I mentioned before, this charter was great! Of course, you can say it would have been better if there were more fish...but as we all know, this is fishing.
We had good laughs, good conversations and an awesome prime rib dinner!!

--Credits--
Thank you Mac Daddy and Robin for organizing yet a great trip!! All your hard work and dedication made this a very safe, comfortable and fun trip!
Thank you First String and Crew. You guys are absolutely top notch and took care of every situation quickly and professionally.
Thank you Calstar for sponsoring a free rod of choice to the winner.
Thank you Kencor for sponsoring a free Inshore Rod, hats, t-shirts and hand towels for the raffle.

Thank you for reading this report!

Looks like good times!!!! and that is what it is all about for sure....... Fun pics and report...
Some of those yellows were small, but not as small as I've seen. Last year the paddy yellows we caught could fit in the hand wells........

Erika,
Yeah it was a great trip! Glad you enjoyed the report! Thanks!

Yeah, these YTs were small but the Dodos were even smaller!!
Just like you said, these dodos probably would have easily fit into the hand wells!!

You should come out and fish with us some time!!
