Edskii, Jwoodman, and myself crossed over to Cruz on my trawler Friday afternoon for the weekend. Little breezy and a little swelly made for a little snotty 2-hour cruise.
We found a peaceful grassy knoll to anchor up over (with no other boats around) and settled in for the weekend.
JWoodman brought along his 12' skiff, so he and edskii went out to harrass the local calicos. I stayed onboard and caught a few ronkies myself.
We had 2 scoops of
fresh-dead chovies and some frozen squid onboard. Luckily about dinner time, the water came alive with green macks, so Jeff and myself sabiki'd until Ed had BBQ'd us up a nice meal of fresh-dead calico and some home-grown yellow zuchini.
After dinner and right at sundown, Jeff and I completed filling the tank with macks while Ed filled the ice chest with WSB.

Jeff caught a calico that I initially thought was a "just short" WSB.

I caught the jackpot ronkie and our first day & evening was complete.
On saturday, we went to chinese harbor to drift for halibuts with a number of other boats. I saw a 12" butt caught on one of the boats and that was about it. There was a 3' swell coming through with about a ZERO SECOND interval. This wasn't quite the peaceful day that we had planned, so back to the "grassy knoll" we went.
More skiff-fishing throughout the afternoon.
CalicoHunter came by for a quick trip through the area. His new 300hp motor sure pushes his boat through the water.
then, time for some fun messing with fellow GBers' ---
I had called one of our GB poachers the night before to let him know about the weather and "fishing conditions". When he showed up and started poaching our spot, I had Jeff take me over in the skiff so I could return the poaching-favor by hooking one of the batrays that he was chumming around
and under his boat.
That evening after dinner, spanish macks started showing. A family of seals also showed up and coralled the macks away from the boat and had their own dinner. Me and Ed scratched out a few macks which resulted in a couple of calicos and a batray.
We were going to hit some rockfish Sunday morning, but the weather was coming up again and I developed a few gremlins on the boat. So we headed back in and cleaned up the boats with plenty of time left for filetting fish......followed by an afternoon napper.
