Catalina island 9-7

Left MDR at 0600 with Farmy, BigRed and Dean. Got two very nice scoops from Larry's bait dock. Nice and flat the whole way over. Fished some kelp paddy's a few miles off the west end for Nada. The water was around 69 and the small calico bass were on the chew. Along with lots of small sheep head and perch. Then it went wide on the bonita as our chum was doing its thing. We kept a few for lobster bait, and one Farmy and Bigred bled and put on ice for sushi. I picked up my Super Seeker Ulua and a Trinidad 40n and wanted to break it in. I sat on the bow for about an hour just tossing it, getting a feel for the rod and reel. Finally I go bendo and about 10 min later I get my first Cat yellow this year and break in my new rod and reel. He bit the bird **** iron. About a half hour later Farmy was bringing his rig in and a yellow hit it at the boat, but came unbuttoned. We made another move in about 60' of water I dropped down a dropper loop and was picked up immediately. Fought really good, I was thinking it was a small yellowtail, ended up being a small wsb. Got the hook out quick, and sent him off for another day. Hung around there for more small perch and calico's and decided to call it a day. The wind picked up a little but layed down as we got back to MDR. Another great day on the water with friends.

Yum, Farmy preping the sashimi!
