Well I got a call from my dad saying that his buddy bought a new boat and wanted to know if I wanted to go out for an overnight out of Dana Point. Well,,, um,...., yeah. I called my buddy Ricky, who lives in Sacramento and a short plane ride and 3 hours later he was in my kitchen drinking a beer.
We showed up at 11:00 for a noon departure and whoa, nice boat, not what I had pictured. Very nice! This thing was a fish slaying machine! A 2007 Luhrs 36' with twin Cummins. DAMN! ...and the best part, there was only 4 of us on it! We loaded up the beer and ice, headed to the bait dock for a scoop and away we went. The original plan was to head out towards the 45 and shoot over to Pyramid head for the night. After we talked to an old salt at the bait dock, he said that he just got back in and that he saw some fish outside the 181 and 209. Perfect, our line past right by both spots.
Well, just outside the 181, sure as sh!t, we ran into a huge pod of dolphins and a bunch of birds working the area. We jumped out in front of the pod, fly lined some monster sardines and BAM, 3 fish on. In about 3 hours we had filled the kill box with YFT and had another 10 fish on deck. All quality fish between 35 - 50 lbs. With the kill box full, so much for the overnight. Time to fillet and head back to empty the boat.
The second day was pretty slow but all in all, an epic trip.
The kill box is also full!
