Black Pearl Sept. 12-14
Saw a charter with open spots fishing on the Black Pearl with Capt. Rick Craddick and jumped at the chance. In the galley meeting Rick said we'd be going a little over a hundred miles south to a real sharp temp break.I figured cool I really didnt want to kill 10 lb. Bluefin anyway.Real tough trip for a lot of people.I was in good form from the get-go.We were on our first rotation(I was #3)when Rick said wind em in we got meter marks.I was skipping my feather in and saw a tuna blow up on it.Feels great to get slammed on the wind even on a troling rod.Nice 20+fish but no baitfish. It was a real picky bite all day. We'd get hammered with every troll rod bent on #10 skippies and 10 people dropping back on the slide.WHAT A MESS!Those things are so unpredictable zipping from corner to corner wrapping ever line in the stern up.I tried showng these guys how to kill a skipjack quick so we could fish(the yft are mixed with and underneath the Skippys)they were taking forever, getting dragged up the side of the boat on trolling gear.Rick was getting PISSED!(Gabe knows).Anyways I figured out if you wait for the yahoos to get all tangled up and take 10 players out of the game then drop in with a small weight you pick up a good tuna every couple stops. At 5 0clock saturday we had 11 tuna,6 were mine. But late in the 4th quarter Craddick saves the day(for everyone else,I was plenty happy)spots a paddy and says mad meter marks.Started out rat yellows and necktie do-dos then I Hook a good one.Must of jumped 25 times.Right when the flathead hits the deck the yft move in.Everyone goes bendo and the future farmers of america show their stuff!Anyways when the smoke cleared we had 20 some more tuna and a couple nice do-do's.Total was 35 tuna (9 of them mine)and like 15 dorado(3 nice ones) and a bunch of small yellows.Second day sucked,as they often do,boat total increased by 2 dorado and 1 tuna.I didnt care.I have a cold and feel like crap/AnywaysRick and Al(Ricks partner)were great,Matt and Smurf on deck and Jeff in the Galley.Great boat and crew,Rick always finds the fish, not his fault if the passengers are all golfers.
