Although WSB and Albies were a possibility, Mary and I were jonesing for Calicos on the plastic, so we decided to brave the crowds on the 4th. We launched our 25 Davis Bahia out of Cabrillo Beach on a super minus tide that made the ramp as slick as barracuda slime, and the fog was thick – maybe 50 foot visibility. Please note: if you have a Navionic’s chip, it may not adequately depict the breakwater; the exit/entrance was way off on ours , at least ¼ mile. Fortunately, the Radar tales the true tail.
We ran up the line until we found a few stones with marks, and bombarded them with Big Hammers and MCs. The current was minimal, but we scratched a few sand bass and some small barracudas. We searched for some better marks and better current until we found some calicoes on the chew. You couldn’t keep the Hammers and other plastics away from the Calicos for about 3 hours, then it slowed to a steady pic. We had an easy 50+ fish day. At one time when we were about to reposition the boat, there was a big mark hugging the bottom and I tempted a decent ling with a big MC.
We went on the cuda quest and managed a few, but they weren’t nearly as fun as the bass and they were brutal on the plastic, so we ended up going back to spank the bass around a little longer. We had to split early for some festivities; however we had an awesome day. Mary and I both had a bass that went 6 ½# on the Boga although most were 2 ½ to 3 ½ and the ling was 18#. All Bass are always released, but even the cudas and the ling went back today.
Paul and Mary.
