Sad day today
Today was a sad day. My friend and I went out of San Pedro for a 1/2 day nooner.
My hooked up on mako. We thought it was just a big cuda, until the damn thing went for a vertical leap 10 feet away from the boat. He started out on the back of the boat and followed the fish to the side of the boat. All was well until I realized my line was caught on someone else's. Guess who's? Yep, it was tangled so bad it froze his reel. By time we realized it was badly tangled, the mako made its hello and goodbye. It jumped out of the water, and seconds after it came back down.........the line snapped.
The worst part of the day is when the captain accidently gaffed a seal. As he was trying to gaff a cuda, I guess the seal went after the cuda and got gaffed. I saw and heard the thing barking in pain as the captain tried to remove the gaff. To top it off, the gaff broke. The seal swam away with the gaff still in it. I felt so bad for the thing.
I'm not a big fan of seals, specially when fishing, but I'm hoping the gaff comes off and that the seal is all right.
I wanted to pull that gaff out and put big ol' band-aid on it.
On the brighter side of things, my friend won today's jackpot with his cuda. For those who recall my thread on seasickness, this is the same friend who get's really seasick. Today he did well. Thank's for everyone's advice.

I'm sorry to hear that a mako (that was believed to be a schoolie 'cuda) escaped the gaff; while a seal (that was about to grab someones' barracuda) was inadverantly gaffed.
what did you friend take for his seasickenss?

He preloaded on bomine, a good night's rest, and ginger candy. The water was really nice yesterday. I'm not sure what would have happened had the water been a bit rough.

Awwww that sucks. I hate it when the seals get in our way of fishing but dont think they deserve death or injury. They need to eat just like us. But let me tell you if given the opportunity to shoot a KNUCKLE HEAD with a paint gun i'm on it! Sorry bout the Shark, good job on the cudas.

Being a paintballer, myself, I find it interesting that this is the new thing to ward off seals. I have a paintball gun that can shoot 30+ balls per second. Put this thing on full auto and it actually sounds kinda fun. Might have to add my paintball equipment to my fishing arsenal.

Hi confuzshutz,
At least if you got tangled .... it was with a buddy. ha ha ha I hate tangling with others. I must pause (happy to do it) casting 15 to 20 minutes a trip to avoid what would be an obvious tangle. In the end .. that saves me and the other guys time.
Poor Sealion, or was it a Seal ... I think they heal pretty good from all the scars on the big-boys !! The pups and young ones are soooo cute !! Wednesday ....... a mother was teaching it's pup how to grab a Barracuda and shake it in the water to stun it !! Did it two or three times in our area.
Good job on JP and thanks for the great report.
