SWBA Tourny Report For 7/12 MDR

Well Gang here’s our report for Saturday:
I am willing to bet that most of you thought with no boundaries and the fact that we now do 50mph plus that we would bomb it up to the Deep Hole, truth is that was plan "B"
Plan "A" was formed after last weekends pre-fish (we only got one in) where we didn’t catch more than maybe 10-11lbs. However we got a later start and we lost three good fish on the AR’s.
That being said our plan was to hit the AR’s early for a half hour, and if we got into any decent fish, even if its pick we would stay in the bay, if not its to off to the Hole!
First drift on the 45ft stuff produced a 3.25 calico and a 1.5 sandie, then nada, so off to spot #2 (near by) first drift a 3 plus sandie, next drift same thing! A couple drifts later a sandie pushing four.
So by 6:30 a.m. we were pushing 15lbs in the well! We spent the next four hours bouncing back and fourth between the two spots culling every hour or so, at 10:45 I decide to run in to the 25-30ft stuff and take a look even though we watched a half dozen boats come and go off that spot over the course of the morning.
Second cast for me resulted in our big fish of the day, a six pound sandie that culled out a 3.75 fish "sweet!"
My very next cast I hook a beast that felt way bigger than the six but only got about ten cranks on it before it broke me off on 25lb! After that we spent the remainder of the day working that spot hard for a few more decent fish, but nothing that would cull, and 30 pound black and a one of Vince’s trigger fish
At 12:45 we decide to bag it, feeling we had a respectable bag that maybe went twenty? And could put us in the top five possibly…. Well we pull up to way in and see team Low Budget holding up their toads (way to go guys) We ended up having 22.13lbs instead of the twenty we thought we had ! But we thought, there’s no way we will win and the best we could dream of was second place.
Needless to say the awards were nerve racking to say the least! I can’t express how awesome it was to be called up as First place!!!! Thanks to SWBA Gang for putting these tournies together and to our fellow competitors for making us strive to try and be better fisherman!!
Also special thanks to Pete at Big Hammer (the 6 1/2 bait slayed em!) Shimano, and especially Pacific Marine for getting my boat repowered in time for us to make the event, the 350 is sweet!!!…..Captain Larry

Hey Larry,

I was wondering what all you guys were doing down there! I was at MDR on Saturday as well and saw the whole fleet in the parking lot. I was gonna stop by to say hi but I was running late.

Congrats on the big win!
