PCYC Tourney/ Birthday Bass

Hey Gang sorry for the late report.
I fished the the 5th annual PCYC Grand Slam tourney as well this past weekend with my team consisting of my buddies Matt Russell and Steve Grenias.

We decided to stick with what we do best and concentrate on the calico’s for this one (surprise J )
Anyways day ones plan was to fish down the coast concentrating on the Deep Hole area in the morning then hitting some of the smaller rock piles off Port Hueneme in the afternoon to kill some time if need be.
2:15am came awful early, after only a few hours of sleep but I wanted to be on the spot before the sun could come up. We worked the area hard till about noon or so for 50-60 legal sized calico’s to about 41/4lbs till the bite totally died, then hot footed it up to Hueneme to finish up the day.
Like most of you know that area tends to get a little snotty in the afternoons, and Saturday was no exception! I usually don’t like to anchor to fish bass but in that slop we had no choice, and it took four tries and 300ft of scope to hold in 45ft of water! That bite started off slow with the odd sandy, cabezon, and rockfish but after and hour or so we started picking away at the calico’s and started to upgrade!
Finally at around 4:30ish I stick a calico that went 6lbs on my scale! And with that I said lets go!
So we get to the scales and we see that team Rock Hopper had weighed in a 5.80lbr, and I am thinking we might have them! And when the scale locked in our fish was 5.95lbs Which ended up being big Calico of the tourney, plus getting us the $25/$50/$100 side pools for Saturday. On a side note, Saturday was my 40th birthday, and I remember as I blew out the candles that night on the awesome cake my wife made me, my birthday wish was that bass would hold as the big calico of the tourney J
On day two my oridginal plan was to fish the front side of Santa Cruz Island, but after Saturdays succes we decides to duplicate Saturdays circuit. Sunday went pretty much the same down the line with the Boys and I nailing around another 60-70fish but this time only to about 31/2lbs and at 11:30 we retreated to Hueneme where the weather was much nicer than Saturday, but unfortunately we wouldn’t be able to upgrade this time. We get to the scales find that team Liberty weighed a 4.6lb calico, but be decide to weigh anyways just in case they wern’t in all of the bass side bets. Good call! That 3.6lb fish got us the $50/$100 side money for Sunday!
Lure wise the 51/2in Big Hammer in the Redflake CalicoHunter was by far the hot setup for the weekend.
We would like to thank PCYC for putting on a great tourney especially CG, Stuart, John and the others great fun/food/ and prizes! And it was cool to see everybodies faces…Captain Larry

Hey Larry,

Thanks for the report. Thats amazing that a calico that big came off those rock piles at Huemene. I stop on them all the time and all I pull up are little rockfish.

I guess I need to Charter you and bring my notepad to take some notes

Good effort out there.

~ Joey
