Goleta Surf Fishing for Exotics W/ Photos 3-28-08

We have been doing well lately for Halibut with a good mix of legals and some good sized perch. 3 inch Hammers have been the ticket. Went yesterday afetr work till it got dark. Had some perch bites early but none stuck. After about 45 min got bit good and landed a 12 inch bardie. Pretty good fight on 8 pound p-line flouroclear. About 15 min later got a 13 incher. Fairly soon after that got bit hard and it's peeling drag. Figured it was a legal hali for sure but it didn't fight like a flattie. It couldn't be another perch. But it was!

I think this is a zebra perch. It was 14 inches and about twice as think as a bardie. It fought hard. I had it hooked solid, with the bait entirely in it's mouth and sticking out through the thick part of the gill plate. By the time I got it out of the water the bait had kind of twisted around, but it was alomost completely in it's mouth with about 1/2 inch of jig head sticking out when I first landed it. I wasn't totally sure what it was but I think it's a Zebra. I have never seen one in person before.

About 20 min later I get ripped again and this time it's a 13.5 inch bardie. Though it was a flattie to.

Though it was a flattie to. Finished out the night with a 20 inch flattie. It was epic times. First 2 perch and the Zebra came on 3 inch Hammer redrum with siler head and the last big perch and flattie came on a 3 inch seawolf on a yellow head. All had pro-cure krill gel flavoring. Sorry about the cell phone cam photos.
