News A surf fishermans wet dream - Leopard Sharks WIDE OPEN!!!

Location: Ventura, Ca.

Date: 4-22-08 and 4-23-08

Bait: fresh caught spanish mackerel

anglers: baitfish13, flipper, skunkmaster, aaron, therubbersquid, fishbone, tbone, and griff "the mudmarlin master".

day 1 catch: (24 leopards, 1 thresher, 2 batrays, 6 shovelnose, 1 sea turtle) - all fish RELEASED

day 2 catch: (30 leopards, 2 shovelnose, 2 batrays) - all fish RELEASED

report & pictures:

The crew gathered at around noon Tuesday morning to go surf fishing. Word got out that a leopard honey hole was found by Aaron the previous day. I stayed at the shop to complete some rods, but these guys just killed it! Landing 24 Leo's, one baby (12 inch) thresher, a couple of batrays, and a few nice sized shovel's. Also.. baitfish caught a baby green sea turtle... frickin weird!
Ok... so... squid didn't really work as good as the fresh dead mack, so after an arm throbbing day of fishing... they guys rounded up to go jig Mack's at the pier... but, the pier didn't produce... humm... made a run to capt hooks and found all the mackerel they could handle.
On day two I got my chance to join in the fun. Fresh bait and hopes these fish are still around... baitfish and I hit the spot first at 1pm. Within 5 minutes we were both hooked up (double). Everyone started showing up during the fight. Landing two nice Leos they quickly baited up and joined in. Jimmy "therubbersquid" began chumming the waters up current from us... soon, we had another fish on... then two... then three... triples! All fish landed and on and on... doubles, tripples... and lots of single hookups. Weird as hell... after my 3rd leopard I finally busted one off. Then another... sheesh, these were bigger. I re-tied with 60lb leader and got hit within minutes of casting out. Baitfish goes bendo... then T-bone.... OMG, this is WIDE!
By far the craziest surf fishing Ive ever seen. All day long.. everyone hooking up with these awesome fish. Aaron took me out for Jackpot with a 64 incher... mine was 62 inch. The only downer to this was Griffs incredible bad luck... with an absolutely wide open shark bit for hours on end... for two days... he only caught one leopard... and it was a baby! lol.... on day two we thought he would do better, but no... 2 batrays and one shovelnose to his credit. Don't know what he was doing wrong, but sheesh...
Anyhow.... amazing... no less than 10 minutes of downtime for 5 hours of solid fishing.

oh... noticed that the water wasn't really as cold as I had thought either... in fact... it was really nice. Warm pocket? ... humm... not sure.
Leopard after leopard... I think I landed 7 leopards and busted off 3.

Good times indeed! Thank's to Flipper for the head's up and to my buddies Mark and Dan for getting wet for my fish! Maybe I'll have a little heavier than 10# next time, but what a rush!!
Myself and Mark closed the session down without anymore fish but we did see some dude getting a BJ in the vehicle next to us as we were leaving at sunset!
