Comments: Decided to fish East Goleta Beach today as I haven‘t been there in quite awhile. I made the LONG walk down to the Hope Mesa Beach area. I managed 3 very nice yellow fin croakers as I was making my way down there (just past the slough). The tide was VERY LOW at this time and I got a very good look at the bottom structure in the area I usually like to fish. Made some mental notes, picked some land marks for reference and fished the Hope Mesa Cove through this low tide. Didn’t have any success in this area until the tide started to come back in. I finally managed to catch 2 short halibut and actually snagged a small smooth hound. There were quite a few sharks working this area as the tide was coming back in. I suspect a bait rod would have been awesome to have at this spot! I may have to try that the next time I go there. I also got freight trained twice during this time! Both times felt like my swim bait was slammed (instant hook-up) and I knew instantly I was out gunned! Finally broke off after about 30 minutes the first time and 45 minutes the second time. I believe both were big bat rays as I saw one right in the surf in front of me not long after losing the second one. Headed back to the car not long after this with no further action.
Here’s a picture of one of the short halibut,
