Location: Santa Barbara

Date: July 18th AM

Anglers: Marvin (Blacklion) and myself Matt

Bait: Cut squid but mostly swim baits (all big hammer allthe time!!!)

Catch: 1 brown smoothhound, 7 landed halibut, 3 lost (by me) 1 corbina (my first) and a nice calico bass

Conditions: Very nice.......It was flat, little to no wind and the water was fairly clear. But there was a lot of dead kelp in the water

I woke up late and called marvin and he was nice enough to wait around for me and we met up in Ventura and headed north to Santa Barbara to try for some flatties. I was telling Marvin I have thrown swimbait for quite some time now and have never been lucky enough to catch a halibut from the surf. Well I finally did it!!! Marvin had to take me to his honey hole to finally get the job done! LOL

We fished all morning without anyhookups and Marvin decides to use his bait rod and hang out in a little cove and try for a shark or ray for a while. I headed back the othe way and finally hooked up on a small little halibut! My first from the surf I was so exited!!! I ended up landing another one on the next cast and I lost it in the rocks. Im pretty sure it was a legal

I then throw out another few casts and sure enough im hooked up this time what I thought to be about a 15lb flattie IT FELT BIG!!! I fought the thing for a few min and landed it. At this poit I run down the beach telling Marvin he has to come down there right away cause it was WFO! He of course comes down and hooks up on his 1st or secon cast with a nice halibut also a little short. Im on again with another borderline legal the broke off in the rocks again

Marvin ended up with 1 more ( I think maybe 2 more) and I ended up with 5 landed and 2 lost in the rocks and one lost in the surf. I also ended up with my first corbina!!! I had three firsts.....1. first halibut from the surf (2) 1st corbina (3) my first calico from the beach!!!

Thanks again Marvin I had a Blast!

sorry guys no pics

What an AWESOME time. You know being out on the water and with a friend, man there is nothing better. Well ya I guess there is - Catching Fish Too . . .

I am looking so forward to being out there and watching the sun come up and set while on board the Mirage with so many friends.

3 Firsts on one trip is a huge accomplishment as well.

Awesome just awesome. Nice going guys.

Matt,

Yes, you had quite a day to say the least!! Halibut, corbina and calico from the surf! The calico was the really crazy one to me. That fish was a toad too, not just a little guy who had lost his way. Why I didn't get a picture of it I'll never know? Guess there was too much excitement going on. You had a day that will always be a great memory for you, glad I could be there to share it with you.

Here are a couple pictures I did manage to get:

smooth hound,

Matt and his corbina,

BlackLion
