El Porto with some good buddies!
Hit El Porto with Oscar, Cappo and some of our pals from SCSurffishing.com. Got there early in the morning, and things got off to a slow start, probably because the tide was wrong.
There were an unbelievable number of sand crabs there, and all of good size, many of them softshell. I'd say the beach was one long bed of crabs from one end to the other.
The bite eventually picked up as the morning progressed, and we started picking up some perch here and there. We saw tons of corbina in the water, but they weren't even biting the softshells. My guess is that they just not hungry due to the abundance of forage sandcrabs available to them right now.
We each caught several perch, and I pulled in one nice Yellowfin Croaker. The guys with the flyrods weren't doing that well today, and I briefly tried some gulp without much luck. I think the only thing getting bit was the live crabs.
It was a beautiful, clear, warm day, and the view was terrific in all directions. The water was warm, and the company was good. As usual, we finished the morning off with some burritos and a pitcher of beer at El Tarasco in El Segundo.
Does life get any better?

The amount of beds was insane. Beans didn't want to participate. I did try to take a pic for the july contest but its alot of work to try to keep your fish alive, write in the sand and take a pic. Maybe next time.

It's normal to find a lot of beds this time of year, but not this many. El Porto was one long bed of crabs from one end to the other. It would be a good place to go and harvest some for use on other beaches.
Usually you have to hunt around a bit to find a good bed. Not this year. They're everywhere.
