Dana Pt Tournament Results Thread...
Well weather was tough, cold it was, and a good squall that rained and hailed on us all on the water from 7-9am. I nailed 5 small sandbass, one barley 12", rest 11" to 8". Fished the harbor in the morning, did not want to be on the open water when the morning weather cell hit, too much lightning in the cell that cleared us in the early am while I was setting up. Headed out of the harbor to find my buddy Matt headed in. He had rolled his yak after getting his bait pump hanging off the side of the yak, wrapped in a lobster line. 3 Calcuttas, 1 Torium, Seekers, and his catch are gone in an instant. If anyone knows anyone with scuba gear in the Dana Point area give a call for area to look. I bounced the area with an iron for an hour, no luck. Continued on the line up towards the boiler rocks were I had my luck last year. Uphill current and mixed up conditions, no bait like last year. More small sandies and then back to the BBQ and festivities. Winner was an 8 lb butt, all tournament results can be found at Jason's website. Great time regardless, will be back next year for another go! TL Rhyno

He had 180+- on the water, more signed up and did not make it. Great turn out, very slow fishing! TL Rhyno

That stinks about your bud that was an expensive turn over. Good to hear you got out and fished and no one got hurt.

Hey it's always a crapshoot, you never know. Must've been tough to camp in the rain, get all the stuff packed up in the morning and in the water! Builds character for the teenagers!

My report is pretty much the same...not as many fish, though. It was still a great time with a great group of guys!!! I was amazed at the turnout and the awesome raffle prizes...although I did not win with that either. I will be there again next year. I am glad I recovered the feeling in my fingers and toes again, MAN WAS IT COLD!!!!
Aloha,
Kojak

I managed to scrape up a few calico's for the bass division. Not bad considering the conditions, and that I've never fished Dana before. My only problem was that I didnt follow my own advice on weighing everything. Once I found the fish...I let the first 3 dinks go(I think those were the smallest Calico's I've ever caught..all legal by a hair and skinny) then only managed 2 more to weigh in...a 13oz'er and a 1.5lb'er. I lost all 3 of the "lures" that were producing to mystery BIG fish(had the drags buttoned down so I wouldnt get rocked on the 8 and 10lb test.) Tap....tap....BENDO..POP! Oh well at least I had 2 winning raffle tickets!
Rhyno, I found the bait...and the marks with the fish on it...including 2 of the breakoffs. Just north of the point and a qtr mile out..as well as right off and around the boilers...the marks had the bait balled up pretty good. Micro smelt in the 2-3" range.
Even with those conditions I left the full wetsuit in the truck and just went with paddle pants and jacket with an NRS top underneath. Just toasty enough and dry!
