Big Hammer's Tourney @ Leo 08-26-06

Thanks for having the Tourney. I had a great time, and enjoyed meeting everyone there.

I'll do a short recap.
Arrived at Leo around 4:30 am, setup the kayak and gear in the dark.
WookieWacker arrived, and we signed up for the tourney.
Once signed up, Big Hammer gave us about $10 worth of plastics, including....
...
...
Red Rum!.

The much sought after "red" BigHammer was being given away.

Lets not forget that Talyor Tackle was another sponsor. They also sell Cobra and Malbu kayaks. Pro-Cure is another sponor but the shipment didn't arrive on time, so no give-aways of their product. The good new is, the next tourney will have double the amount of Pro-Cure give-aways.

The Surf was up in the morning, maybe that was the reason why a few who signed up on the internet didn't show.
I think there was close to 20 applicants.

There were 4 divisions.
Biggest Bass - 5 lbs
Bass Division - ?
Multi Species Division - ?
Biggest Fish Division. - Calico Bass of 5lbs.

Not exactly sure who won what.

Surf was up in the morning, not too bad. Some went South of Leo, others like myself went all the way to deep hole.
The poor power boat that did the weigh ins had 6 miles to cover. Bummer.
Sorry, the rules never gave us a boundry.

Time flew by. Headed in around noon for the prizes.

Mad dash to land. Notice the surfers in the background.

Make sure you look to see the incoming waves before landing.

Any word on the results yet? We didn't make it there as I was helping my wife prep the classroom for the first day of school!

Any good halibut caught?

Thanks for the report Pete!
I was too beat from surfing and the Mirage trip last week to get out and fish Saturday or even try to paddler for the P15 at CIKC on Sunday....last weekend of summer for the kiddo's as well.
Heck if I would've seen Robby and Jake there I wouldnt of even fished for bass! I see that they got into the money..."no brainer" there! And good to see Eric placed as well! Bet Robbie headed south to his honey holes in front of Brad and Angelina's house for his winning stringer.
If it's any consolation, I drove out there first thing after work to check it out. Saw you and one other person out on Deep Hole proper just as Larry was pulling up to you in Calico Hunter III, and it looked like nobody told the tubers that the rock area at Leo was a dead zone...

Jake and Robby did a pre-fish on Thurs. From what Robby told me, south of Leo was slow and he didn't have much confidence in that direction. So three of us went North. Robby, me, and Ed. Jake went South.

It was illegal to use live/frozen bait and chum slicks. When we saw the Party Boat we thought, hmmmmm, I beat they have a chum slick going. We never got close enough because as we paddled in their direction, we kept on seeing nice structure to fish. One of the people on the party boat wanted to see if he could chuck his lead weight and hit a kayaker. They must not like it when they see kayakers pulling in fish and they are not.

Robby was first on the board and was in the lead. Then Jake caught the biggest fish of the day at 5 lbs. Robbie never beat that number but his quality and quantity made him the winner of the total weight division. He had a bunch of 4lbers.

The float tuber by the no-kayak zone rocks came in fourth, which goes to show how productive that area is. Not to mention EFISH in the same area caught the biggesst fish of the day, beating Jake by about 4 oz.

Hard to beat these types of tournaments. Short and sweet. It only costed me 20 bucks.

Sorry John, I forgot to reply.

The biggest fish was a Calico. 5lbs. Heard a short Halibut caught by Jake, but no keepers. I guess the Halibut won't bite until you get there. That's what you get for not showing up.

Dang! A 5 lb calico was the biggest fish. We'll see about that this weekend.
