New yak

Any advice on setting up my new X-FACTOR would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking i should get a seat and paddle and take her out for the maiden voyage. Any good info on what kind of seat and paddle? I've read alot on this site and there is some good info and i am to say the least scared to sh** and dont want to screw anything up. I live in LB so i was thinking of taking it in the back bay by the boat docs to start. Anyway if this works here are the pics. Thanks Jason

next to your yak a paddle is the next most important thing you are going to buy for your kayak. i'd suggest going into a store and getting a feel for the different ones on the market. you have a kayak center in long beach check'em out...

there really is quite a range in paddles. they can range from $50 all the way to $450 for a werner carbon fiber ultra light paddle... it all depends on how much you want to spend... as far as a seat, dont be cheap. if you can do it get one of the $150 seats with the gel pads in it. your ass and back will thank you.

for your first voyage, harbor is probably a good idea so you wont have to deal with surf.

good luck and congrats on the yak... you will love it!

First off get a good PFD, one thats comfortable and you will actually wear.

Seat, get a highback one. Some have bells and whistles like rod holders, a pouch, padding etc....But IMO a highback is necessary.

Paddle, like was mentioned above it varies. Personally I use a cheap cobra paddle. Yeah its heavier than those light carbon fiber ones, but I abuse the crap out of mine and it holds up strong. I doubt those carbon fiber ones can hold up to the abuse.

Finally rod leashes...make sure everything on your yak is strapped down...You never know when you might roll.
