New Kayaker Needs Tips

Hey fellas,

I'm new to kayaking, though I enjoy much of the little I've done. I was wondering if some of you guys would be willing to share names of places you take your yaks out to.

I'm looking to build me a list of Kayak-friendly lakes. I'm in the Los Angeles Area and am willing to make a drive for a good spot. Also, share any restrictions/rules such as mandatory waders, etc.

I'd like to also build a list of salt water spots.

Thanks in advance!

try castaic easy launch there. for salt pretty much anywhere stick to the harbors at first then try a beach launch. where do you live? I live just south of Santa Monica and take my yak out a bunch. Let me know if you want to join me and we'll hook up. As far as what you are required to have... read the dfg regs they are very helpful but make sure you have a measuring device and a net with an 18" opening before heading out. get or make some rod leashes trust me you will flip you yak you will loose some gear but when you hook and land a big fish on your yak its all worth it

Yes it is, but many dont follow the rule. Nobody's EVER gotten checked either. Some just bring along a large mesh gamebag which satifies the requirement.

Welcome to the yak world Miguel, what are you paddling?

I've got a Cobra Fish N Dive. Kind of big, but feels nice and steady.

Yeppa....yakkin is allowed in the main lake. I manage the bait shop there and I see lots of yakers up there. Wind surfers too. There is one dude that has a small "sail" for his yack for windy days....friggin works awesome ....he actually went faster in the wind than one of my rental boats...LMAO!!!!!

Thanks! Now I can ditch that stupid net that I never use. It keeps snagging my casts. Bringing a large mesh laundry bag.
