Calling All Yaks

Ok here goes, this Yak thing looks cool. So I’m thinking about getting one. I have been doing a little research and have come to the realization that before I plunk down my hard earned cash I definitely need to test drive a few. Further on that subject I thought it would be wise to rent a Yak for the day and go out and see if I would even really enjoy it. (I think I will but I want to make sure.)
  • Peddle versus Paddle
  • Need a link to the DFG & USCG regulations regarding ocean kayaks
  • Seriously considering Hobie Mirage Adventure (1st choice)
  • Also considering Hobie Mirage Revolution (2nd chice)
It would be cool if you would tell me what kind of yak you own now, and what kind of yak you would buy today and why if you had the money.

Any other suggestions, web sites, etc would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! Let the opinions flow.

150 lbs isnt much room to spare on a yak...figure add in your gear (rods/reels/tackle/seat/paddle/etc...) Thats probably 30 lbs or so...Add in a livebait tank another 30 lbs. You nail a 100 lb thresher, you are sort of screwed.

For example I have a Prowler 13 with a capacity around 425 lbs...I weigh 165. I also have a Cobra FND sitting in the garage where that capacity is 600 lbs...

Best advice is to try different kayaks...Most kayaking shops will let you test them for free.

With all the different choices of yaks, you gotta ask any and all questions[dumb or not] Hobies come complete when new [seat rod holders, seat, pedals, paddle anchor, cart etc. all you would need is the sail option. all kayaks come usually with no hatches, paddles, seat, rod holders bait tanks that's where the package deals come in check out all the kayak web sites for input, highly recommend kayak fishing magazine for info [published quarterly] Good luck... also check FHS kayak displays, get all brochures GOOD LUCK!!
