Hey Pineapple-What's the legal trailer hitch extension length?

I want to add a "T-bar Support" to the back of my SUV so I can load up yaks on the top. I figure I could place it a couple of feet behind the rear hatch on a hitch extension. I called Eckhart and they thought the limit was around 3 feet, but weren't sure.

I recall, Joe, that you said yours was somewhat legal. Does anyone know?

Thanks!!

The only thing I can suggest is to call your local Highway Patrol office. They would know for sure. Not something you want to guess at.

The legal requirement for transporting anthing on your vehicle is that if it is more than 3 feet behind the rear bumper of the vehicle, you must have operable running lights and turn signals on it, such as a trailer, or that it has a red flag with minimum dimensions of 12" X 12" attached to the tail end of the item(s) being transported. The following is not in CHP legal lingo. I hope this helps.

Yep and if it is at night you have to have a working red light that identifies the furthest point as long as the extension doesn't block your existing brake light/turn signal lights. No part of the vehicle can extend more then 12 feet behind the center point of the furthest most rear axle of the vehicle.

Hey John! you can check with CHP or go to DMV and get a commercial drivers handbook, ..... 4ft past bumper at night a red lite must be attached, daytime a red flag must be hung on it,
